Chelsea Voss announces departure from OpenAI

Chelsea Voss has announced her departure from OpenAI. When she joined in 2019, the public was still aware of GPT-2. She wrote that with her experience of playing with Markov chains and Andrej Karpathy's 2015 character model, amplifying GPT-2 would be revolutionary.

Her seven years included: the first time seeing GPT-3 output syntactically correct Python functions, discovering multimodal neurons in CLIP, the DALL·E 1 paper and DALL·E 2 product, the first live coding competition with the Codex model in 2021, discussing GPT-4 with Bill Gates in 2022, exam assessments in 2023, and ChatGPT. The Codex in 2026 was written as a follow-up to this line.

The reason for her departure was stated as tools already existing. Her next step is not another lab, but starting a family with Martin Shkreli. Their son is already one year old, and their daughter is expected to be born in February. She thanked Greg Brockman, Sam Altman, and others for the opportunities during ups and downs, stating that the company has put knowledge access and action capabilities into the pockets of about a billion people.

Her public resume includes a Bachelor's in Computer Science from MIT with a minor in Mathematics, and her Master's thesis used a theorem prover to analyze cellular signaling pathways. Before joining OpenAI, she worked on remittance fraud prevention at Sendwave and bookkeeping at Pilot. She won gold medals at the International Biology Olympiad in 2010 and 2011. In 2019, Geoffrey Irving recruited her as an alignment engineer.

She envisioned using text intelligence to automate mechanical drawing, write websites and mathematical proofs, design proteins, and analyze the human genome. The post did not mention the number of options, severance compensation, or whether she would retain a consulting role.

The buyer is a still-expanding lab, while the seller is a researcher trading seven years of product cycles for parenting. The event was driven by her announcement. Personnel are withdrawn from Codex and model releases, benefiting already launched products and her family arrangements, while the team responsible for bridging the gap from CLIP, DALL·E to exam assessments is under pressure.
