Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, reiterated that the belief that hard work equals success is a myth. He stated that what truly makes a difference is first determining which problems are worth solving, and that not everything needs to be done right, as most things do not affect the outcome; only a few do.

In the "CEO Diary" program, he expanded on the same point: when young and directionless, one must charge ahead, like a triathlete rushing into open water; once a lead is established, one must slow down, as running at full capacity continuously will hit diminishing returns. Entrepreneurs who spend all night polishing slides and proofreading fonts often lose on fundamentals weeks before, not because they didn't change the font size at 2 AM.

He recalled that at Netflix, there were word-for-word disputes over user-facing copy and images, but later they shifted to getting half-finished products out quickly for real feedback. As long as the idea is somewhat correct, even rough tests will get users' attention immediately. He also wrote that success is related to hard work, but it is not the same as obsessive overtime; behind every successful and overworked founder, there are hundreds of others who worked just as hard but failed, with luck being one of the primary variables, and survivor bias turning overtime into a causal narrative.

He was the first CEO of Netflix, testing the feasibility of mailing DVDs with Reed Hastings in 1997, and the company launched in Scotts Valley, California, on April 14, 1998. He was responsible for naming, early interface, and branding. Amazon once explored acquiring the company for slightly over $10 million, but neither side accepted. He left in 2003, believing he was better suited for very early stages rather than later scaling; Hastings subsequently turned the company into a streaming service. He has also participated in or founded several other companies, claiming that two out of seven startups he was involved with achieved billion-dollar results.

He later became a founder coach, angel investor, and speaker, with his book "That Will Never Work" recounting the path of mailing DVDs against Blockbuster. His public resume also includes involvement in the U.S. version of Macworld and mail-order computer businesses like MacWarehouse and MicroWarehouse, bringing the relationship between overnight delivery and retention to Netflix.

Attention and agendas are being repriced. Buyers are founders and employees looking to reduce ineffective overtime, while sellers are former founders packaging "choosing the right problems" as a methodology. Funding is flowing into speaking, writing books, and coaching, rather than into more overtime. Benefiting are teams that can conduct small experiments and gather feedback quickly; under pressure are recruitment pitches and overtime cultures that treat hours worked as output.
