Rauch, who started with Next.js and a front-end cloud platform, has his company headquarters and core team based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This judgment did not include pace, routes, or race results, but pointed out the terrain and climate as the city's hardware. The San Francisco Peninsula is uplifted by fault lines into continuous hills, with street gradients exceeding 30% in some areas: Filbert Street between Hyde and Leavenworth is about 31.5%, often used to correct the impression that "the steepest is Lombard Street"; many roads in the Bernal Heights area exceed 35%. Running media have ranked San Francisco as one of the best running cities in the U.S., based on the ability to experience beaches, forest trails, elevation gains, and scenic views on the same route. The climate is cool and foggy in summer, leading tourists to often wear the wrong clothes, which reduces heat stress for long-distance running.
