Cristiano Ronaldo issued a statement saying that after the national team coach's press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proenca, he decided to leave the national team training camp and will explain the reasons to the Portuguese people at an appropriate time.

The statement was made on the eve of the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark on Thursday. He wished the team and all his teammates good luck but did not announce his retirement from the national team. The federation confirmed his departure from the camp, allowing the remaining 24 players to continue preparations without calling anyone up to replace him. At 41, he has made 234 appearances for the national team, scoring 146 goals, holding the record for most goals in men's international matches, and is pursuing his 1000th career goal; he has scored 11 goals in World and European Cup matches, winning the 2016 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025 with the team.

The trigger for this situation was his non-participation in the 2-1 loss to Norway on Sunday. Coach Jorge Jesus informed him before the match that he would not play but might come on as a substitute; however, he was not substituted in the end, and after the match, Cristiano did not join his teammates in acknowledging the away fans, heading straight to the locker room. On Monday and Tuesday, he worked out in the gym with strength training and did not participate in team training. Jesus denied any refusal to train or discord at the press conference, stating that he would participate in Wednesday's training and emphasized that the rules apply to everyone equally. If everything goes as planned, AC Milan forward Goncalo Ramos will start against Denmark. Jesus stressed that he is the coach and will only use Ronaldo for 30 minutes if needed, and no player can change his decision. Cristiano then left Copenhagen's Parken Stadium in a federation vehicle, with media reports suggesting his private jet was set to fly to Madrid.

Jesus previously coached Cristiano at Saudi club Al Nassr, where he started him in a 1-0 win against Wales last week. The federation president changed his schedule to mediate but was unable to keep him. Neither of them was present when the team returned to the hotel.

The personnel changes reflect the star's departure, while the coach retains the right to rotate players. The buyers are the new coach, who needs to establish authority, and the generation of Ramos, who wants to start, while the seller is the captain, who views the national team as a stage for his career. The incident was triggered by Ronaldo not being substituted and the press conference narrative. The beneficiaries are the attacking line that gets to start as planned and the coaching staff that needs to assert authority; the pressured parties are the commercial interests and public opinion still tied to the captain's symbol in the lineup, as well as fans who have yet to hear the "full truth." The federation's decision not to call anyone up essentially leaves the conflict to be handled outside the camp.
