President Donald Trump: Midterm Elections Must Reverse Course

Donald Trump stated that the midterm elections must reverse the trend, noting that sitting presidents typically lose seats during midterms, and there is no reason to repeat this pattern. He will support approximately 35 key races that will determine control of Congress.

In a speech to Republican lawmakers, he said that regardless of the president's performance, seats are lost in midterms, "We need to reverse this because there is no reason for it to be so." In another interview, he indicated that he would not campaign as vigorously as in the presidential race, stating that if the Democrats regain Congress, they will be "obstructionists" for two years and may negotiate. Advisors told the media that the situation will be very difficult, with the best outcome being a repeat of the 2022 midterms where Democrats lost the House but retained the Senate. His October itinerary includes battleground states like Florida, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, with Vice President JD Vance also campaigning; Alabama and Oklahoma are internally considered exceptions. He claimed that the super PAC and political nonprofits combined have about $800 million, planning to invest around $400 to $500 million in the midterms.

Polls and betting markets are leaning towards the Democrats. Prediction markets give the Democrats about a 91% to 92% chance of regaining the House and just over 60% for the Senate. Generic ballot leads are about 8 to 9 percentage points. Some polls place the president's approval rating at around 32%, with a net approval rating dipping to negative 23. The Democrats need to flip 4 seats to take the Senate. Advisors stated that the coalition has fractured, and it is difficult to win back independent voters, shifting strategy to maximize base voter turnout and reduce reliance on persuadable voters. Some Republican candidates' ads and websites downplay the president's image, with party insiders saying the cake is already baked, and the left will tie them to the president, so it is better to focus on mobilization.

Pressure comes from prices, energy, and the Iran conflict. When asked how to narrow the Democrats' lead, an advisor replied: go back to the past and never go to war with Iran. Gasoline, diesel, and heating oil prices are rising, with tariffs and wars blamed for increasing living costs. At the Dallas midterm conference, he mentioned that if both chambers are retained, each adult would receive a $5,000 "dividend," and stated that oil prices would drop after the war ends post-election. House Speaker Mike Johnson has tied the party's fortunes to the president.

Funds are flowing from the president's controlled treasury to battlefield television and travel, with ballots needing to be squeezed from the 2024 presidential coalition again. The buyer is the White House political team looking to flip the situation, while the seller is the Democratic challengers already priced in the betting markets. The event is a mobilization order five weeks before the election, not a policy shift. Beneficiaries are candidates in safe districts who can still mobilize using him; those under pressure are battleground district lawmakers and voters who must digest long-term interest rates and oil prices. Prediction markets have nearly locked in the House as a done deal, while the Senate remains a narrow door that is still negotiable.
