Speculation on Shutdown Triggered by Departure of Abstract Core

Speculation has arisen regarding the potential shutdown of Abstract, a consumer Ethereum Layer under Pudgy Penguins' parent company Igloo Inc.: Founder Luca Netz removed the Abstract identifier from his X account name, and the official account is in a semi-dormant state, with no official response as of publication.

The community claims that core developer Cygaar's associated wallet is transferring funds out of Abstract, and his X account has remained silent since June 2026. On the same day, a post stated that a wallet associated with him transferred a substantial amount of PENGU out of Abstract after months of inactivity. Netz spent a year incorporating the identifier into his name, and its removal has led to separate discussions within the community.

In August, two executives had already left. Ecosystem lead Mason announced on August 17 that his term had ended; he joined in October 2024, before the chain launched, and had over 1,000 hours of conversations with builders in 2025. He also stated that builders generated over $37 million in revenue on Abstract last year. Product lead 0xBeans has left, with the community claiming he has restarted on a competing chain.

The application side is also withdrawing liquidity. Yield Guild Games announced on October 9 that it would remove the YGG/ETH liquidity pair on Abstract, citing the shutdown of YGG Play and a shift of liquidity and attention elsewhere; YGG on Ethereum and other networks remains unaffected. In July, YGG had already shut down its issuance department, resulting in the removal of four applications: LOL Land, Ragnarok, WaifuSweeper, and GigachadBat from Abstract.

The chain itself has not issued any announcements regarding shutdown, block production suspension, or asset redemption. The community has linked the silence of accounts, the departure of executives, the transfer of funds, and the lack of official response to infer a possible shutdown; some have mentioned regulatory delays or undisclosed internal projects. None of these have been confirmed by the company.

From a market mechanism perspective, this is a relocation of on-chain funds driven by a withdrawal of confidence, rather than an announcement from a spot exchange. Buyers are market makers and game publishers still providing liquidity on Abstract, while sellers are wallets transferring PENGU and trading pairs out. Funds are flowing from this consumer layer to the Ethereum mainnet or other networks. Beneficiaries are the competing chains that capture the withdrawn liquidity and builders; those under pressure are users still farming, earning badges, and points on the chain, as well as the official account that has yet to clarify bridge and asset arrangements.
