India's outsourcing leader Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has net reduced 23,460 jobs in FY2026, marking the largest annual reduction in the company's history; industry reports describe this round of cuts as the starting point for a shift in India's labor-intensive outsourcing model.

The job cuts exceeded the company's earlier estimates. TCS had attributed a reduction of about 12,200 mid-to-senior level positions, approximately 2% of its total workforce, to skill mismatches rather than directly to AI productivity. By the end of Q3 FY2026, the employee count was 582,163; the second quarter saw a drop from 613,069 to 593,314, a reduction of 19,755, followed by another cut of 11,151 in Q3, totaling over 30,000 in two quarters, surpassing the original plan of 12,200, with the difference coming from layoffs and attrition. The voluntary attrition rate in the IT services sector was about 13.5% over the past 12 months. Chief Human Resources Officer Sudeep Kunnumal stated that over 217,000 employees have advanced AI skills.

The net change among the top five firms was less than that of TCS alone. TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra collectively reduced their workforce by 7,389 in FY2026, compared to a net increase of 12,718 in the previous fiscal year. Infosys had 328,062 employees at the end of June, a decrease of 532 quarter-on-quarter, but an increase of 4,274 year-on-year; the company still hired over 4,000 fresh graduates that quarter, with a target of about 20,000 fresh graduates for FY2027, and a voluntary attrition rate of 13% over the past 12 months. TCS's fresh graduate hiring plan for FY2027 is set at about 25,000, down from previous targets of 40,000 to 42,000.

Contract pricing methods are also changing. TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, and Cognizant have reportedly shifted to outcome-based pricing instead of hourly billing, as clients demand greater price reductions and higher output. AI is being utilized in basic coding, manual testing, and customer support. Infosys crossed the $20 billion revenue mark in the same week as the layoffs were announced.

Jobs are not disappearing across the entire industry. The total employment in India's IT sector is expected to increase by about 140,000 in 2026, reaching approximately 5.9 million, with the increase primarily coming from global capability centers expanding for the third consecutive year; reports suggest these centers may add about 120,000 specialized positions by the end of the year. Traditional service providers have cut over 128,000 jobs globally, which does not equate to the net reductions in India.

Market mechanisms indicate that this contraction in staffing is driven by client price pressures and AI replacing labor hours, rather than a disappearance of demand. Buyers are Western clients demanding the same deliverables with fewer man-days, while sellers are Indian delivery centers charging per headcount. Budgets are shifting from junior coding and testing positions to AI-skilled roles and global capability centers. Companies that can shift contracts to outcome-based pricing and retain entry-level talent benefit; those under pressure include mid-to-senior level conventional delivery roles and small to medium-sized outsourcing firms still selling on a per-man-month basis.
