On October 4, 2026, 60 Minutes released a preview stating that recruitment for jobs highly exposed to artificial intelligence has slowed down, with software development being specifically mentioned. Workers in their 20s are under pressure. The preview points to the program airing that day, but the main text does not provide unemployment rates, sample sizes, or company names.

The program page released by CBS at the same time describes the theme as the future of entry-level jobs, noting that AI is changing tasks traditionally handled by entry-level employees. The listed discussant is tech executive Clara Shih, with the program scheduled for Sunday’s 60 Minutes. The preview is approximately 1 minute and 19 seconds long, and no verbatim transcript of the full interview was released before airing.

A public estimate pointing to the same phenomenon comes from a revised paper titled "Canaries in the Coal Mine?" by the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, dated August 12, 2026. Authors Erik Brynjolfsson, Bharat Chandar, and Ruyu Chen used payroll data from the U.S. payroll processor ADP as of June 2026, covering millions of workers. The paper states that no job replacement has been observed across the entire economy.

The same paper limits the gap to young people. Employment for those aged 22 to 25 in high AI-exposed occupations is about 19% lower compared to peers in low-exposure occupations. There is no comparable gap for experienced workers. Under the same criteria, the gap based on July 2025 data was 15%, expanding to 19% by June 2026. The adjustment mainly comes from fewer young hires, not from higher turnover.

Section 5 of the paper focuses the decline on occupations where AI is primarily used to replace human tasks; in occupations where AI is mainly used to supplement human work, employment remains stable or increases, particularly for experienced workers. Adjustments occur in employment numbers, not base salaries. The authors state that even after removing tech companies and computer occupations, controlling for exposure to interest rate hikes and remote work, and using other exposure indicators, the differentiation still exists. From November 2022 to June 2026, employment for those aged 22 to 25 in the highest exposure quintile decreased, while the same age group in the lowest exposure quintile increased.

This represents a reallocation of recruitment budgets, not a round of layoffs. The buyers are companies still hiring experienced developers while assigning entry-level tasks to models; the sellers are job seekers aged 22 to 25 in high-exposure positions. Funding is shifting from junior headcount to model subscriptions, internal AI agents, and outputs from senior employees. Beneficiaries include experienced developers with existing codebases and client relationships, as well as labs selling programming and office AI; those under pressure are recent software graduates relying on entry-level positions to build their first output records. Another study by the New York Fed on the slowdown in recruitment suggests that while AI may contribute, it is not the main cause of the slowdown.

The 60 Minutes preview itself does not cite the 19% figure. The program describes software development as an example of a young, high-exposure group, while Stanford's payroll estimates focus on replacement-type occupations, not all positions interacting with models.
