OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger publicly sought help on X, stating that the Android app for the project had been stuck in Google Play review for over a week and asked if anyone knew someone at Google who could assist. Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai replied to the same post: "Got it, I will follow up."

The timeline is publicly recorded. Steinberger's request was posted on October 3, 2026, at 18:07 (UTC), and Pichai replied at 18:38. About two hours later, at 20:45, Steinberger confirmed that the new update was live and publicly thanked Pichai. Public reports did not provide a Google internal ticket number, nor did they clarify which review stage was altered.

Pichai's reply was subsequently widely shared. As of the latest visible count, it had approximately 17,431 likes, 423 replies, and 5.18 million views. Earlier reports noted around 21,000 views and about 10,000 likes, indicating that engagement continued to rise after the reply was posted. Steinberger's original post had about 8,042 likes and 1.43 million views at the same time.

OpenClaw is an open-source personal agent that he started from a WhatsApp message in November 2025, initially named Clawd, then Clawdbot, and later Moltbot. On February 14, 2026, he announced joining OpenAI to bring the agent to more people, stating that the project would transition to a foundation, maintaining its open-source and independent status. The OpenClaw Foundation was launched on July 8, 2026, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, where he continued to make technical decisions and led Claw Labs within OpenAI.

The Android side is not the gateway itself but a supporting node. Documentation specifies that the gateway must run on macOS, Linux, or Windows WSL2, with the phone pairing via QR code or setup code, providing chat, real-time calls, push-to-talk, gateway operation approval, and user-activated camera, screen, location, and notification capabilities. The Google Play page is signed by the OpenClaw Foundation, rated for everyone, and shows downloads of over 100,000. The repository also provides a universal installation package with signatures and checksums that can bypass the store installation.

This is a public upgrade of the distribution gateway, not a new product launch or pricing adjustment. The buyers are users pairing their own gateways on Android, while the seller is Google, which controls the Play review and listing switch. Regular developers' review requests remain in the queue, while this time it was the CEO responding to a public post. Beneficiaries are the OpenClaw update that had been stalled for a week and mobile users waiting for pairing; under pressure are other developers without the same public channels, also stuck in review, and the need to explain why a personal reply could alter the Play review system.

Steinberger's previous venture was the PDF framework PSPDFKit developed around 2011, later renamed Nutrient in 2024. This time, he did not take the public route of developer support tickets but directly named individuals within Google on social media.
