This year, Musalem is not a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee. He did not predict the outcome of the meeting on October 27-28, stating that he remains open-minded at each meeting, but the overall direction of inflation requires consideration of further tightening. Traders generally expect the policy rate to remain at 3.75% to 4.00% in October. The Committee raised rates at the September 15-16 meeting and included another rate hike in the same meeting; the market currently anticipates the next rate hike in December. Minutes released on Wednesday show that further increases after last month's hike are already a set direction for many officials, with most expecting another hike at some point in 2026.

He defined inflation as the primary issue for the economy while also noting strong growth and a stable job market. His assessment is that the Fed is likely to lower inflation without harming hiring, and returning to 2% would be beneficial overall. His remarks also touched on the unsustainable fiscal path but did not provide new deficit figures or spending cut proposals.

This is a signal for the path, not a vote for the current meeting. He back-calculated the 18-month inflation target into a 6 to 9-month rate hike window, effectively setting December, rather than October, as a closer observation point.
