On October 8, Elon Musk wrote that Robin Ren was his physics classmate at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, the two drove from Philadelphia to Palo Alto, as they were both going to Stanford for graduate studies. This was posted after a photo mistakenly identified as Ren was corrected to show his Hong Kong roommate, clarifying the distinction between the classmate and the roommate.

Ren's public resume aligns with this road trip. He completed his undergraduate studies at Penn and entered Stanford for a master's in electrical engineering in 1995. Musk registered for graduate studies at the same time but dropped out a few days later to start Zip2. Ren stayed to finish his degree. In June 2015, Ren joined Tesla, serving as Vice President for Asia Pacific, then Global Vice President of Sales, and in May 2019 transitioned to Vice President of Business Development, leaving in June 2020 after about five years.

The Shanghai factory is a notable achievement for him at Tesla. Musk mentioned in an earnings call in August 2018 that Ren, who grew up in Shanghai, played a role in establishing the Chinese factory and maintaining relations with the government. Reports cited by Benzinga stated that he and Musk negotiated loans for the Shanghai Gigafactory with state-owned banks, securing terms better than market rates. The factory began production in January 2020 after record approval and construction speeds, making Tesla the first foreign automaker to build a wholly-owned factory in China.

The photo correction did not come with a new job title. Musk did not indicate that the two are still working together, only confirming their physics class and the westward drive after graduation. Ren's position after leaving Tesla was not mentioned in this post.

This is a clarification of relationships, not a new collaboration. The mistaken side included an old colleague from the China business in a roommate photo, while Musk kept the physics classmate in the context of the drive from Philadelphia to Palo Alto. There was no transfer of funds. The beneficiaries are the two names that were clarified, while the pressure is on the misrepresentation of the freshman roommate and the negotiator for the Shanghai factory as the same person.
