Cboe Global Markets has signed an exclusive 25-year license extension with S&P Dow Jones Indices, extending Cboe's exclusive listing rights for S&P 500 index options until 2051. Both parties stated they could collaborate on innovations beyond traditional index derivatives, with tokenized options contracts listed as one possible direction.

The agreement did not disclose the licensing fee or provide details on the blockchain, clearinghouse, trading venue, or launch timeline for the tokenized products. The collaboration began with the launch of SPX options in 1983. Cboe reported that in 2025, SPX options traded 970.6 million contracts, averaging 3.9 million contracts per day, setting a new daily record for the fourth consecutive year. CEO Craig Donohue stated that the extension provides certainty for SPX and VIX licensing and leaves room for new technologies. S&P Dow Jones Indices CEO Catherine Clay noted that demand for exposure to U.S. equities is accelerating, hoping everyone can access this benchmark in the most suitable form.

Reports indicate that the licensing fee rate will remain unchanged in 2026 and will be adjusted starting in 2027, with Cboe expecting limited impact on net revenue growth; following the news, Cboe's stock price rose approximately 6.6% in pre-market trading. S&P has authorized the S&P 500 for on-chain index products and 24-hour perpetual contracts on Hyperliquid; this time, the "format experiment" is written into the options licensing text with Cboe, rather than announcing a tradable token.

Cboe already has cash-settled Bitcoin and Ethereum futures options and products related to Bitcoin ETFs and volatility. Nasdaq, the parent company of the NYSE, and clearing companies are also transitioning traditional markets to on-chain infrastructure. The existing positions and on-exchange trading rules for SPX have not changed due to this statement, and the exclusivity still only covers Cboe's on-exchange options.

From a market mechanism perspective, buyers are locking in the certainty of the world's thickest index options market until 2051, while sellers are dealing with unpriced tokenized options. The narrative focuses on the renewal of the licensing; beneficiaries include Cboe's SPX/VIX fee rights and S&P's index authorization, while those under pressure are exchanges wanting to list similar index options elsewhere. Tokenization being written into the 25-year text means securing legal permission first before deciding whether to move clearing on-chain. The absence of sentences about chains and venues indicates that this is a licensing structure leading the way, not a market-making structure.
