French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI has completed a new funding round, raising €3 billion, with a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion, making it one of the largest single-round fundings in Europe’s AI sector.

This round was led by Swedish private equity firm EQT, with funds coming from its €5 billion "Scaleup Europe Fund," which is dedicated to equity investments in European growth-stage tech companies with global competitiveness.

This is Mistral's second large funding round within a year. In September 2025, the company completed a €1.7 billion Series C funding round, with a post-money valuation of €11.7 billion, led by Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML, which holds about 11% of the company. Other participants included DST Global, a16z, French state investment agency Bpifrance, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, and Nvidia. The company's valuation has risen from €5.8 billion in the Series B round in June 2024 to over €21 billion now.

The new funds will primarily be directed towards a computing infrastructure project called "Mistral Compute": the company aims to build 200 megawatts of computing capacity by 2027 and expand to 1 gigawatt by 2030, positioning it as a "European sovereign computing solution that does not rely on American cloud infrastructure." The company has also set a target to achieve €1 billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026.

On the product side, Mistral adheres to an open-weight model approach, allowing customers to deploy privately on their own servers, which is seen as a core selling point distinguishing it from American companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. The pricing strategy is also low-cost; for example, the input token price for Mistral Small 4 is about $0.15 per million tokens, roughly one-fifth of the pricing for GPT-4 Mini.

In terms of funding flow, buyers are mainly European growth funds and industrial capital: EQT represents financial capital betting on the European AI sovereignty narrative, while ASML represents industrial capital—a semiconductor equipment company investing back into downstream AI software firms to secure future computing demand. The beneficiaries are Mistral and the European "tech sovereignty" policy narrative, while the pressured parties are companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, which are also competing for the European market but have their infrastructure primarily based in the U.S.

According to industry estimates, the global AI infrastructure market could reach $570 billion by 2030, but there are also doubts: whether independent labs like Mistral can truly compete with American giants backed by large cloud vendors in terms of the speed of computing infrastructure development remains to be seen.
