Reddit announced on September 30 that it will stop supporting RSS, citing that RSS has become a common entry point for large-scale scraping and automation abuse. RSS will cease on November 13. Non-moderator users will have no alternative sources.

Moderators relying on RSS for alerts are directed to the Discord Relay application on the Developer Platform, and must migrate before the deadline, or community alerts will be interrupted. The company stated in the moderator area that it will retain the moderation process relying on RSS, but only through officially supported alternative tools. Regular subscriptions, external readers, and research scraping are not included in the retention.

The public API will close in March 2027. New public API applications will no longer be accepted after October 31. A migration progress update will be provided on November 10, with the registration for the migration bounty program closing on November 30. Approved third-party applications and bots must complete registration by January 12, 2027, or they will lose access. There will be another progress update on February 23, and all remaining applications and users will be closed in March.

The company claims that over 14,000 applications and bots have registered, with a $1 million migration plan to encourage developers to transition to the Developer Platform. DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot, and RemindMeBot are described as having completed or nearing completion of migration. Affected are social listening tools, research interfaces, and AI assistants calling Reddit conversations.

The announcement also tightens access to Old Reddit. In the coming months, access will be limited to logged-in moderators and users who have recently used the old version, also due to scraping and automated traffic abuse. The company acknowledges that RSS has long been part of the open web, but still chooses to shut it down rather than continue providing it with added verification.

The buyers are model companies and automation tools still scraping conversation data, while the seller is Reddit, which is converting free exports into platform-based interfaces. This is an event-driven supply contraction, not a reduction in content. Data licensing contracts and registered applications on the Developer Platform will benefit. Under pressure are RSS readers, unregistered bots, social listening products, and training pipelines that treat Reddit posts as free corpus.

The easiest scalable export will be cut off first on November 13. The public API will remain until March 2027, providing a migration window for registered applications, not leaving room for unauthorized scraping.
