Jane Street disclosed in SEC filings that it holds approximately $990 million in Bitcoin spot ETF exposure, corresponding to about 15,394 BTC at current Bitcoin prices.

This position is achieved through ETF shares rather than directly holding Bitcoin, covering products such as BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust, Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust.

BlackRock IBIT is Jane Street's largest single allocation, with a position value of about $828 million, accounting for approximately 84% of its disclosed Bitcoin ETF portfolio. The investment objective of IBIT is to track the performance of Bitcoin prices.

Jane Street previously significantly reduced its Bitcoin ETF holdings in Q1 2026: IBIT holdings decreased by about 71% quarter-over-quarter, with an ending value of approximately $225 million; Fidelity FBTC holdings also decreased by about 60%, valued at approximately $115 million. The latest filing shows a substantial increase in allocation thereafter.

This disclosure reflects the long position in securities at the end of the reporting period, insufficient to infer Jane Street's net directional risk in Bitcoin. As a quantitative market maker, its ETF long positions may correspond to futures, options, spot, swaps, or other hedging positions not fully presented in the 13F.

In July, Jane Street recorded a loss of about $15 billion due to AI hedge fund Situational Awareness positions and declines in tech stocks, marking its first monthly loss in nearly a decade; however, the company's net trading income for the year still exceeds $40 billion, already surpassing the full-year figure of $39.6 billion for 2025.

Mechanically, Jane Street gains Bitcoin price exposure through ETFs without directly handling private key custody, on-chain settlement, or exchange account risks; its demand translates into trading of fund shares like IBIT and FBTC and primary market redemption activities, with corresponding Bitcoin reserves adjusted by ETF authorized participants and custodial systems. If the holdings are used for market making or arbitrage, Jane Street may simultaneously establish opposite positions in ETFs, CME futures, spot, and options markets, benefiting from liquidity and spread capture rather than solely betting on BTC price increases.
