OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah: a universal personal agent sacrifices understanding of events and no one is responsible
In an a16z podcast on October 3, 2026 (co-participated by Replit co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad and hosted by Erik Torenberg), OpenRouter co-founder and CEO Alex Atallah said that the worst thing about a personal agent making cross-domain connections is that the more work you give it, the more you sacrifice your understanding of “what is happening,” and no person or anything new is responsible for that sacrifice. The agent itself bears no responsibility.
Atallah pointed out that companies can only bear a limited amount of cortisol (stress/accountability capacity). If you want to reduce stress in a certain area, you have to sacrifice understanding of that area and let someone else bear that stress; but an agent will not bear any responsibility. He mentioned that he has a universal agent that helps him find things to handle every day and tries to handle them, but the agent cannot truly improve — after each attempt to improve, about a week later he will ignore its output and feel that it does not really care about the specific things it is processing in depth.
He compared two options: a Chief of Staff who is good at drafting replies for the whole organization, versus 10 equally capable Chief of Staffs, each responsible for a specific area of life. The latter allows you to adjust how much understanding you sacrifice in each area in exchange for how much benefit. He speculated that future sub-agents will be highly vertically focused, coordinated by a Chief of Staff-type agent, so that each agent is psychologically more responsible for its own domain and quality checks are easier to carry out.

Alex Atallah was previously co-founder and CTO of OpenSea, and in 2023 he co-founded OpenRouter (an LLM model marketplace and routing layer), which was recently acquired by Stripe. He has long focused on multi-model routing and “neurodiversity,” and opposes a single “god model” taking the lead.
The capital and business path behind this view is: the “responsibility vacuum” of personal agents comes from their cross-domain integration nature — after users outsource understanding across multiple domains, they cannot apply pressure the way they would to human subordinates through performance, feedback, or replacement. Using his own universal-agent practice as an example, Atallah shows that a lack of domain focus leads to a failed improvement loop.
In contrast with Amjad Masad: Masad leans toward a cross-company agent and appreciates cross-domain connections; Atallah instead advocates 10 vertically specialized Chief of Staff-style agents, so that the degree of sacrificed understanding can be adjusted by domain. This echoes Adam Smith-style specialization logic, but in the opposite direction — machines should be extremely specialized, while humans retain generalist capabilities.
This mechanism changes the design constraints for agent products: after scaling, universal agents are likely to be ignored by users because accountability is untraceable, while a vertical-agent plus coordination-layer structure allows users to precisely allocate their limited “cortisol budget” to high-value domains while retaining controllable oversight over other domains. The key observation metric is whether users continue to review and iterate the output of specific agents, rather than relying only on a single universal entry point.

The more work you give an agent, the greater the sacrifice of understanding of events, and the agent does not bear that responsibility.
A universal agent cannot adjust the degree of sacrificed understanding by domain; vertically specialized agents can.
The total amount of cortisol available to a company or an individual is limited, and responsibility must be borne by a specific subject.
