OpenAI lets U.S. Pro users exchange messages with their personal agent Dot via iMessage or RCS

The official ChatGPT account posted on X on October 28, 2026, that users can now interact with their personal agent Dot via iMessage or RCS. Users can assign tasks to Dot with text, images, or voice memos, and Dot will also proactively text updates on task progress. This feature only allows the user and their Dot to exchange messages and will not let Dot or OpenAI access the user’s other text conversations. The feature is currently rolling out in preview to U.S. Pro users.

OpenAI launched the Dot personal agent at DevDay on September 29, 2026, powered by GPT-6 Astra and positioned as an always-on agent that can continuously handle tasks in the background and retain context. At the time, the company said it could be interacted with through ChatGPT, Slack, Teams and other channels, and previewed that text message support was coming soon. This rollout uses third-party provider Linq for message sending and receiving; to set it up, users need to select Texting in Dot’s profile and verify their phone number. Official documentation confirms that the feature is currently in beta, is limited to U.S. ChatGPT Pro users, supports one-to-one conversations, and does not yet support group chats or traditional SMS.

Several media reports noted that because messages are relayed through Linq, conversations are not end-to-end encrypted even when using iMessage or RCS. OpenAI said it has conducted penetration testing and security reviews, but the architecture cannot support end-to-end encryption. Context and plugins remain consistent between ChatGPT and the texting channel.

ABAB AI Insight

OpenAI launched Dot at DevDay on September 29, 2026, positioning it as an always-on personal agent powered by GPT-6 Astra that can continuously handle tasks on its own cloud computer and connect to thousands of apps. The initial channels were limited to the ChatGPT app, Slack and Teams, and text message support was explicitly described as coming soon. The preview rollout to U.S. Pro users embeds Dot into users’ existing iMessage and RCS message threads, extending the agent from in-app interaction to a native texting interface.

On the technical side, messages are relayed through third-party provider Linq, so even when using iMessage or RCS, conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. OpenAI emphasized that the feature is limited to one-to-one conversations and does not access other conversations, and said it has carried out security testing. Context and plugins remain consistent across channels, and users can choose to have Dot push important items via text first, while routine updates stay in ChatGPT. This design reduces the friction of opening the app proactively while bringing proactive push capabilities into everyday messaging flows.

Compared with competitors such as Meta Muse, Dot had already emphasized multi-channel access and background work; this move makes texting a native touchpoint and brings the agent closer to an always-available form. The difference is that it is currently only in preview for U.S. Pro users, at a monthly price in the $100 range, and the encryption architecture remains constrained by the relay. Key indicators to watch include whether it expands to more regions and plan tiers, users’ acceptance of non-end-to-end encryption, and the actual usage frequency and task completion rate of proactive text updates.

ABAB News · Cognitive Law

  1. The agent expands from in-app use to native texting, lowering the threshold for proactively opening the app while embedding proactive push into everyday message flows.

  2. The one-to-one restriction coexists with a relay architecture; the security boundary is protected by channel controls rather than end-to-end encryption itself.

  3. From “coming soon” to a U.S. Pro preview rollout, channel expansion speed is constrained by region and plan tiers.
