Apple releases first MacBook Pro with touch support

Apple released a press release on October 28, 2026, introducing the new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display. The device is the first on Mac to support touch operation, with touch sensors directly integrated into the OLED panel, and it also adds Dynamic Island. The new machine comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and supports up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage.

PROLED XDR uses tandem OLED technology, with peak brightness of 2000 nits (HDR and SDR), a contrast ratio of 10 million:1, support for P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts, and an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. Dynamic Island serves as the entry point for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI. Touch support includes swiping, pinch-to-zoom, drag-and-drop, and window operations, and can be used alongside the keyboard and trackpad. The chassis is thinner and lighter, with the 14-inch model weighing about 3 pounds and the 16-inch model about 4 pounds. Battery life is up to 24 hours. In the U.S. market, the starting price for the 14-inch M5 Pro model is $2,899, and the 16-inch M5 Pro model is $3,399; the M5 Max versions are $4,499 and $4,799, respectively. The new products are available for preorder starting today, with deliveries beginning on November 6.

This model will coexist with the earlier non-touch Liquid Retina XDR version of the MacBook Pro. The company said the touch sensors are built into the panel to reduce latency, macOS automatically converts touch into clicks, and third-party apps can further optimize gestures.

ABAB AI Insight

Apple has introduced tandem OLED and touch at the same time into the high-end MacBook Pro line this time, with the touch sensors directly integrated into the panel rather than added as an external layer. The company said this reduces latency. Dynamic Island has been moved from iPhone to Mac, serving as a unified entry point for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI. The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are the same as in the previously released non-touch version, but the new model has changes in storage ceiling and chassis weight, with the 14-inch version about 0.5 pounds lighter and the 16-inch version about 0.7 pounds lighter.

In terms of price, the touch-enabled PROLED versions are about $400 more than the corresponding non-touch M5 Pro/Max models at the starting price. The product line will be sold alongside the existing Liquid Retina XDR version rather than fully replacing it. Touch is mapped by default to clicks in macOS, existing apps can use it immediately, and versions optimized for the new gesture API will roll out in batches. Professional users can directly manipulate 3D models, software instruments, or drawing on the screen while retaining a keyboard and trackpad workflow.

Compared with Apple’s previous cautious stance on laptop touch, this time touch is positioned as an incremental input method for professional workflows rather than a complete replacement. Metrics to watch include adoption of touch in actual professional software, the sales mix with the existing non-touch models, and whether similar display technology will later be brought down to lower price tiers.

  1. With touch sensors integrated into the OLED panel, input latency is removed from the external-layer structure while keeping keyboard and trackpad use in parallel.

  2. The high-end PROLED version will coexist with the existing non-touch models, with a starting price premium of about $400, creating a tiered choice for display and input.

  3. Dynamic Island has moved from mobile to Mac, concentrating live activities and the search entry in a fixed area at the top of the screen.
