MoonPay Launches AI Payment Tool PayBox Integrating ChatGPT and Claude

MoonPay has launched the AI payment tool PayBox, allowing users to integrate it with ChatGPT or Claude, enabling AI assistants to directly handle payment transactions for booking flights, restaurants, or online shopping. Users can choose to require a passkey approval for each transaction or set limits for the AI to complete transactions autonomously.

PayBox integrates cryptocurrency wallets and payment cards, supporting cross-chain transactions based on the x402 agent payment standard, initially supporting Solana and EVM-compatible chains. Wallet private keys are protected through multi-party computation and trusted execution environments, ensuring that no single party can independently access the complete private key or sign transactions.

Under this event-driven model, funds are concentrated towards AI-native payment gateways, benefiting merchants and cross-chain infrastructure that support x402, while traditional payment intermediaries face pressure.

MoonPay has previously embedded cryptocurrency purchasing channels into AI assistants like ChatGPT, with a historical trajectory extending from fiat deposit tools to AI agent payment layers, similar to its early expansions into card payments and wallet services. This time, PayBox directly embeds non-custodial vaults into the conversation interface, completing a closed loop from inquiry to execution.

In terms of capital pathways, control over key splitting is achieved through MPC and TEE, introducing the x402 open standard for account-less machine payments. The motivation is to seize the entry point of the AI agent economy, allowing cryptocurrency assets and fiat cards to be invoked in the same conversation, while reserving expansion space for future DeFi exchanges and more platforms.

Similar cases can be seen in Coinbase's early promotion of x402 and traditional payment providers like Stripe experimenting with AI interfaces. The current payment industry is in a transition from manual confirmation to agent autonomous execution, with cross-chain and agent standards becoming key competitive points.

This essentially represents a technological replacement: conversational AI replaces traditional payment pages and API keys, with the mechanism allowing agents to prepare and sign after users set permission boundaries, reducing friction while lowering single-point risks through cryptographic isolation.
