Y Combinator releases report on crypto startup directions

Y Combinator released a crypto industry startup direction document in October 2026, noting that over the past year crypto applications were for the first time led by institutions rather than consumers, and that the main driver shifted from speculation to actual financial needs such as hedging against oil price risk and cross-border fund transfers for businesses.

YC expects assets such as stablecoins, stocks, debt, commodities, and home ownership rights to be further tokenized; new types of assets such as startup equity and small securities worth less than $10,000 will also be issued through blockchain, and the development of financial services such as trading, lending, and derivatives will be promoted. AI agents will become one of the main participants in financial activity.

In the next six months, YC will focus on using blockchain to finance the AI industry, new dollar stablecoins and non-dollar stablecoins for niche markets, new banks based on stablecoins, tokenization of real-world assets, new trading platforms and trading interfaces, as well as AI agent trading and related API infrastructure. YC believes blockchain technology and stablecoins may respectively pose challenges to traditional stock exchanges and the banking system.

This YC document shifts the focus of crypto startups from consumer-side speculation narratives to institutional financial tools. Oil price hedging and cross-border corporate fund transfers are explicitly listed as drivers, indicating that the focus is on commodity risk management and corporate treasury scenarios rather than retail payments or meme trading.

The scope of tokenization expands from stablecoins and stocks to debt, commodities, and home ownership rights, as well as startup equity and small securities under $10,000 that were previously difficult to securitize. This provides new asset bases for trading, lending, and derivatives, while positioning AI agents as entities that can directly participate in these activities, requiring corresponding API and trading infrastructure.

Stablecoins and neobanks are mentioned together, including both niche-market dollar stablecoins and non-dollar stablecoins. YC judges that blockchain and stablecoins may respectively disrupt traditional stock exchanges and the banking system, which is a statement about potential structural change rather than an already realized outcome.
