Apple releases its first touchscreen major redesign MacBook Pro
Apple on October 28 released the all-new MacBook Pro, equipped with a PROLED XDR display and introducing touch functionality on a Mac for the first time. The model is available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, uses tandem OLED technology, offers up to 2,000 nits of brightness (HDR and SDR), a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, supports a variable refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz, and covers the P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts.
The touch sensors are directly integrated into the display panel itself, rather than added as an external layer, to reduce latency. It supports swipe scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, drag and drop, double-tap to full screen, and other actions. The new hinge design improves screen stability during touch use, and it is equipped with image stabilization for video calls. The chassis is thinner and lighter: the 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, and the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds. It comes with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage, and battery life of up to 24 hours. Preorders begin today, and shipping starts on November 6. The 14-inch M5 Pro starts at $2,899, and the 16-inch M5 Pro starts at $3,399.

ABAB AI Insight
Apple’s introduction of touch to the MacBook Pro breaks the company’s long-standing position against touchscreens on Macs. Former CEO Steve Jobs once described touchscreen laptops as ergonomically poor. This design keeps the traditional laptop form factor, not a convertible 2-in-1, with touch as an auxiliary input alongside the keyboard and trackpad.
Display technology is another major change. PROLED XDR uses tandem OLED to replace the earlier Mini-LED setup, delivering higher brightness and contrast and introducing Dynamic Island. This aligns with the display path of the iPhone and iPad Pro, while also reducing the device’s weight through a thinner display stack. The choice to integrate the touch sensor directly into the panel rather than adding an external layer is a technical decision aimed at reducing latency.
In pricing, the new models carry a premium over non-touch versions with the same chips. The company positions touch for professional workflows, such as design, music, and app testing, rather than as a consumer-wide replacement. The preorder and shipping schedule indicates this is a product launch aimed at the holiday season.

A long-rejected input method was introduced once display technology and weight reduction conditions were met at the same time.
The touch sensors are directly integrated into the panel rather than added as an external layer in order to control latency.
Professional positioning and premium pricing coexist, and touch is not made a standard configuration across the lineup.
