Minecraft Creator Markus Persson Admits He Enjoys Vibe Coding After Previously Rejecting AI

Minecraft creator Markus Persson posted that he must admit he is enjoying vibe coding, perhaps he was a little wrong before.

This admission is a far cry from his stance earlier this year. In January, he wrote that using AI to write code is still a terrible idea, and that advocates are either incompetent or evil, stating that programming is about logic, not typing, and likened it to letting models write laws. In mid-July, he tweeted "Reject AI," which garnered millions of views. About a week later, he softened his stance: unable to find satisfactory programmers, he prepared to use vibe coding for tools like map editors and node graphs, saying he wouldn't feel too guilty about firing chatbots.

In the following days, he began using Claude to find use cases, joking about whether he could still mock this type of person after becoming a vibe coder himself, and mentioned that his earlier opposition was actually a suppressed, useful thought for a long time. In August, he suggested he might need to admit he was wrong and shared conversation records; he also assured that he would maintain the foundation of his works. He noted that models could create WGSL syntax highlighting plugins all at once, which are indeed useful scaffolding he was too lazy to write. A post on September 22 shifted his tone from tentative to enjoying it. Some responses included laughter, including from Elon Musk.

Persson is currently working on a dungeon crawler project called Levers and Chests. He has limited AI to internal tools rather than claiming core gameplay is handed over to models. The difficulty in hiring is the publicly stated reason for this shift: the tool layer can be outsourced to generators, while he still wants to retain control over the foundational logic.

In market mechanisms, this is a cultural licensing event. The buyers are model and editor companies that want to legitimize coding agents; the sellers are independent developers who regard "handwriting every line" as part of their identity. Funding does not move due to a single admission of error, but a shift in opinion leaders will reduce internal resistance to introducing agents in studios. Beneficiaries include coding products like Claude, while those still branding themselves by rejecting AI face pressure.

On a supplementary note, vibe coding refers to describing requirements in natural language, having models write, and often running code directly. Persson has not disclosed the paid tier of the model he is using, the proportion of generated code in his repository, or whether core gameplay has been handed over to agents.

Notch's reversal path is about feel, not theory. He first nailed down AI programming with moral language, then was pierced by hiring failures and a syntax highlighting plugin. Minecraft is a world he built with his own logic, so opposition would be strong; once the pain of the tool layer exceeds principles, admitting wrong becomes just a matter of dosage—"teensy tiny bit." Keeping core gameplay in his hands is a way to find an escape for his identity.

Capital has long written coding agents as cost-cutting tools. Large companies use them to accelerate boilerplate code, while independent developers lack a second pair of hands to create toolchains. Persson's fame is enough to turn a single admission of error into an industry license: if the creator of Minecraft can enjoy it, maintaining the internal "we don't touch this" becomes harder. What model companies want is not his repository, but his attitude shift.

Similar structures exist where photographers move from rejecting retouching to relying on post-production, and musicians go from rejecting automatic drums to accepting mixing assistance. Each time, they first uphold craftsmanship, then hand over the most unpleasant parts of the craft to machines. The gaming industry is at a stage where engine capabilities are rising, there is a shortage of manpower, and players are allergic to "fully AI games." The tool layer is breached first, and the worldview is negotiated later.

Essentially, technological substitution shifts from the margins to identity. The mechanism is: opposition is easiest to establish at an abstract level, while usage occurs first at concrete pain points; when hiring gaps and boring plugins appear simultaneously, principles will yield the tool layer while attempting to maintain control over the core layer. How long the core layer can be held depends on whether the model is satisfied with just syntax highlighting next time.

  1. The heaviest opposition often first loosens on the most boring tools.

  2. When unable to hire, principles will first hand over scaffolding to machines.

  3. Admitting wrong does not require overturning everything, just acknowledging that enjoyment has already occurred.
