Strategy’s operating profit came almost entirely from fair value changes in its bitcoin holdings. Under current accounting standards, even if bitcoin is not sold, market price changes are recognized in current-period profit or loss. Excluding digital asset gains, the software business contributed only limited profit.

The company has continued to raise funds through equity and preferred stock issuance to increase its bitcoin holdings and manage its preferred stock structure. Large-scale repurchases of STRC have brought the preferred stock’s price close to par value, which the company describes as having “returned to health.” Bitcoin holdings grew 26% during the year, but the pace of net accumulation slowed within the quarter.

Metrics to watch are the impact of subsequent quarterly digital asset fair value changes on profit, the pace of preferred stock buybacks and dividends, and whether bitcoin holdings continue to grow net.

  1. Quarterly operating profit at bitcoin treasury companies is mainly driven by fair value changes in holdings rather than operating software revenue.

  2. The scale and price performance of preferred stock buybacks can be used by a company to illustrate the market status of financing instruments, but the buybacks themselves consume capital that has already been raised.
