Musk Claims Superintelligence Could Boost U.S. Useful Output by Over 50% by 2030

Elon Musk stated in a response that if the relevant predictions are rephrased as "U.S. useful output," it is highly likely that superintelligence (SI) will achieve over 50% growth by 2030, unless a major war occurs.

This response was in reference to Anthropic's claim, shared by Kalshi, that AI could push the U.S. GDP to $44 trillion by 2030. Musk adjusted the metric from GDP to "useful output."

Musk has recently referred to superintelligence as SI and discussed the impact of AI and robotics on economic growth in other statements. He has indicated that when human-like robots reach mass production, the extreme growth scenarios in the Anthropic model will become reality.

Currently, the U.S. GDP is in the low $30 trillion range. If useful output grows by over 50%, it would correspond to a significant absolute increase. Musk conditioned this on the absence of major wars.

Capital and computing power continue to flow into AI and robotics-related fields, with Musk-controlled companies including xAI, Tesla, and SpaceX. If the measure of useful output focuses primarily on the actual increase in goods and services, it may differ from traditional GDP statistical paths.

Elon Musk continues to promote AI and robotics applications through Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Recently, he has referred to superintelligence as SI in public statements and discussed its potential impact on economic growth, including a response to the Anthropic growth model.

This response rephrased Anthropic's claim of a $44 trillion U.S. GDP by 2030 as a growth of useful output exceeding 50%. Musk conditioned this on the absence of major wars and shifted the focus from traditional GDP to actual useful output.

Similar judgments can be seen in other AI companies' long-term forecasts on automation and productivity improvements, with some models assuming recursive self-improvement and rapid deployment. We are currently in a phase where model capabilities are continuously improving, and businesses and governments are beginning to assess the impact of AI on macro output.

This represents a technological substitution: if superintelligence is deployed on a large scale, it will shift some cognitive and physical tasks from human paths to machine paths, thereby altering the growth rate of useful output. Traditional GDP statistics may not fully capture the increments generated by machines, making "useful output" a viable alternative metric.

  1. Useful output equals machine increments plus human increments.
  2. Superintelligence deployment equals a leap in output speed.
  3. War risk equals conditions for disruption in growth paths.
