Coinbase CEO Claims to Be Building the Most AI-Driven Financial Account
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that the company is committed to making Coinbase the most AI-driven financial account, enabling users to manage funds more efficiently and make smarter decisions.
Previously mentioned, Coinbase has launched Coinbase Advisor, which is registered with the SEC as an investment advisor and can provide suggestions based on user portfolios and account history, supporting natural language interaction.
The company also introduced the Coinbase for Agents feature, allowing users to connect external AI agents to their Coinbase accounts for trading and payments within set limits. Agents can also obtain independent financial accounts through Base, MCP, and X402.
Armstrong previously noted that AI creates programmable intelligence and labor, while cryptocurrency creates programmable money and markets, with the combination forming an agent economy. The company's goal is to enable AI agents to pay each other, cross payment walls, and execute on-chain transactions.
Internally, Armstrong stated that about 40% of daily code is generated by AI, encouraging engineers to use AI tools more broadly. The company has also launched an internal AI coaching tool to assist employees with decision-making and feedback.
User funds and transaction data flow to the AI analysis layer, where agents can perform operations within their authorized scope. If the agent economy expands, more trading and payment flows will be generated by machine accounts rather than solely by human users directly operating.

Brian Armstrong co-founded Coinbase, which has expanded from a cryptocurrency trading platform to multi-asset and payment services. It previously launched Coinbase Advisor and registered with the SEC, while also opening Coinbase for Agents, allowing external agents to connect to user accounts for limited trading and payments.
Armstrong positions AI and cryptocurrency as complementary: AI provides programmable intelligence, while cryptocurrency offers programmable money and markets. By providing independent accounts through Base, MCP, and X402 for agents, it enables agents to autonomously pay and trade, rather than relying solely on human instructions.
Similar paths can be seen in other trading platforms launching AI advisors or agent connection features, with some companies also opening accounts to external AI tools. Coinbase is currently in a phase of extending from a trading platform to AI agent financial infrastructure, covering both human users and agent accounts.
This represents a restructuring of the industry chain: expanding financial accounts from serving only human users to also serving AI agents, allowing trading, payment, and advisory functions to be called through natural language and agent interfaces. If agents become the main trading entities, then the flow of funds and operational paths will shift from human interfaces to machine coordination.
