Universal Cross-Chain Protocol to Shut Down in 60 Days

The cross-chain packaging protocol Universal announced that it will gradually shut down due to insufficient adoption over the past two years to sustain long-term operations. A shutdown notice was released on September 18, stating that the protocol will continue to operate normally for 60 days, until November 17; during this period, uAssets will still be supported 1:1 by the underlying assets, and existing infrastructure will remain operational. The official statement noted that it has supported over 80 types of assets and has bridged some assets across multiple chains, but the usage is not enough to cover ongoing operations.

Within the 60-day window, users can sell uAssets in the application or redeem them for the underlying assets through the minting and redemption interface. Large redemptions need to contact the team; the official warned that as redemption volumes increase, direct processing will slow down. After November 17, the protocol will close, and remaining positions will be redeemed by smart contracts. uSOL will be exchanged for SOL on Base, while uXRP, uDOGE, uADA, uBTC, and uLTC will be exchanged for cbXRP, cbDOGE, cbADA, cbBTC, and cbLTC respectively; all other varieties will be exchanged for USDC. The final redemption assets and contract addresses will be announced before the shutdown.

The protocol structure allows licensed merchants to mint and redeem instantly, with Coinbase Prime hosting the underlying assets and direct minting on the target chain instead of users bridging themselves. uAssets exist in ERC-20 or SPL format, including chains like Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Solana, and World. Reserves will be displayed with verifiable proof. In February 2025, the project completed approximately $9 million in financing, led by Andreessen Horowitz. The shutdown is not due to theft, but a proactive liquidation after insufficient adoption.

The exit path rewrites "original chain assets" into "Base bridged assets or stablecoins." Holders of uSOL will receive SOL on Base, not on the Solana mainnet; other small tokens will be converted into USDC, with the exchange rate and timing based on announcements made before the shutdown. Selling will go through the application market, while redeeming will go through merchant liquidity; both processes will slow down during the run on the bank. Positions not operated within the window will have to wait for subsequent contracts, which are not yet online.

The market mechanism involves the disappearance of packaging premiums and congestion in redemptions. Sellers are those who need to clear their positions and market makers before November 17; buyers are those who can absorb bridged assets or USDC liquidity on Base. Funds will flow back from the dispersed uAsset labels to existing bridging coins and stablecoins in the Coinbase ecosystem. Beneficiaries are custodians and existing deep bridging assets on Base; those under pressure are applications treating uAssets as trading pairs or collateral, and positions that cannot return to the mainnet. The event is driven by the operator's proactive shutdown, not a consensus failure of any particular chain.

Universal aims to sell "packaged assets that can be minted directly on the target chain without bridging." Licensed merchants combined with Coinbase Prime bring cross-chain risks into compliant custody, using instant minting to avoid permanent losses in the liquidity pool. Closing after two years indicates that the packaging itself did not create independent demand: traders can directly use cbBTC, cbXRP without needing the u prefix. The $9 million led by a16z bought multi-chain minting and reserve proof, but did not secure enough daily active users and fee revenue.

Capital exit is framed as 60 days of commercial operation plus contract redemption, extending the run on the bank to avoid depleting merchant inventories on the same day. Six types of Base positions redeeming for Coinbase bridging assets, with others converting to USDC, align the liquidation list with the custodian's existing product line. Those remaining in obscure uAssets will accept stablecoin settlements, losing directional exposure to original chain assets. The contract will only be announced before the shutdown, leaving the final pricing power on the operator's calendar.

Comparisons can be drawn to the large number of packaged assets and cross-chain wrappers from 2021-2023: renBTC, various oBTCs, and synthetic stocks issued by small bridges, which ultimately reverted to mainstream stablecoins or custodian bridging coins when liquidity was insufficient. Wormhole and LayerZero compete on the messaging layer; Universal competes on the asset layer brand. Once the asset layer lacks unique interest rates or scenarios, the brand dies first. The industry phase shifts from packaging expansion to controlled contraction—those who survive are symbols embedded in Coinbase and Base order books, not just another u prefix.

Structurally, this represents a reconstruction of the industry chain after technological substitution. The mechanism is: cross-chain demand is consumed by less packaged, more deeply custodied bridging assets; licensed minting reduces risk during growth periods but becomes a cost center requiring oversight during downturns. Insufficient adoption is not a security incident; it is a failure to establish a fee right.

  1. More layers of packaging require more usage to survive.

  2. Liquidation for stablecoins equals cancellation of original asset direction.

  3. Custody can prove reserves but cannot prove willingness to pay.
