X Launches Ten-Digit Number for Private Messaging Without Following
Benji Taylor, head of design at X, stated that the platform has begun rolling out X Numbers, allowing anyone to contact others on X using this number without needing to follow each other or send friend requests. Those who do not need it can deactivate it with one click and can immediately refresh to obtain a new number.
The number serves as a dedicated contact code of about ten digits within X Chat, enabling holders to send private messages and make audio or video calls without revealing their real phone numbers. Non-following visitors must enter the other party's number when initiating a private message from their profile page. Large accounts and professional accounts are said to benefit the most, as they can send the code to designated recipients and then invalidate it.
X Chat originally allowed sending private messages to fans and could set the receiving range to everyone. X Numbers introduces a third tier between "followers only" and "everyone": it is only open to those who know the number. The feature began appearing in batches on iOS and other clients in early September and is now being more widely promoted.
Taylor also oversees design for X and SpaceXAI, having joined in March of this year after working on products related to Coinbase Base and Aave. At the same time, X is also promoting X Money and other in-platform payments. Refreshing the number invalidates the old one, used to cut off previously leaked contact channels.
This is part of product entry expansion. Buyers are large accounts seeking interviews and business but do not want to open full private messaging, while sellers still rely on the old private messaging model filtered by follow relationships. Traffic is shifting from external emails and WhatsApp usernames back to in-platform conversations and calls; beneficiaries are professional accounts treating the contact code as a temporary badge, while those under pressure are users relying on follow walls to block spam messages but have not timely deactivated or refreshed their numbers. Calling capabilities are activated along with the code, with a greater potential for abuse compared to pure text messaging.

X removes the follow relationship from the address book and replaces it with a disposable ten-digit code. This is a standard move for instant messaging products: WhatsApp uses usernames with optional keys, Telegram uses usernames, and X uses in-platform numbers to avoid sharing SIM cards. The head of design also oversees X and SpaceXAI, indicating that the conversation layer is being integrated as a group entry point, not just a social attachment. X Money has already rolled out to some Premium+ users, and once the number can make calls, the next step is to define payment recipients as "those with a code" rather than mutual followers.
The capital path is to keep stranger contacts within the platform. Large accounts previously pushed business inquiries to email, and the platform does not receive conversation duration or call minutes. One-click refreshing reduces the cost of opening codes and encourages high-frequency distribution. The phased rollout first targets large accounts that can demonstrate the feature, then expands to regular users, using professional scenarios to prove it is not a new harassment channel.
This is comparable to WhatsApp's username keys, Discord's friend codes, and WeChat's expiring links for chat only. X is in a transitional phase from broadcasting information to controlling an in-platform address book: the number of followers is no longer the only pass. The industry stage sees social platforms using disposable credentials to capture instant messaging market share while also directing traffic to payments.
The structural change is a reconstruction of the industry chain. Following, private messaging, and phone numbers are split into three sets of permissions. The mechanism is: whoever can issue a refreshable in-platform number no longer needs the user's phone address book; invalidating old codes equates to reclaiming entry points. The social graph no longer determines whether you can speak; the rhythm of code distribution and invalidation does.

Once the follow wall is dismantled, the platform reclaims the address book.
Refreshable numbers are more marketable than permanent usernames.
First, issue codes to large accounts, then decide whether to accept payments.
