Anthropic Launches Claude Motion Code Animation and Integrates with Runway

On October 8, Anthropic launched the beta version of Claude Motion, allowing users to convert reports, charts, or product guides into short animations using prompts. Claude drives the movement of text, charts, shapes, and images by writing code, outputting editable MP4 files.

This feature is currently available only to Claude Team and Enterprise plans, enabled by default for Team; it does not use video generation models, thus not generating real images or characters, but allows for individual modifications of numbers, text, or timing without affecting other parts.

Runway, as a launch partner, enables users to export Claude Motion animations to Runway for further video and image generation, editing clips by description, and assembling longer content with Runway Agent; official demonstrations show that Motion provides structure, while Runway supplements pixel-level generation.

Applicable scenarios include converting quarterly reports into 30-second presentations, adding animated charts for board presentations, and creating product guides for new users; animations are based on user-provided content, ensuring accuracy of numbers and text.

Anthropic has also transitioned Claude Docs, Slides, and Design from beta to full release, covering all plans including the free version; Motion animations can be further edited in tools like Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, and Luma AI.

Enterprise users ensure data accuracy at the code level, then enhance visuals at the generation level, forming a layered workflow for explanatory videos; tools relying solely on text-to-video generation face challenges in scenarios requiring numerical precision, while the combination of code animation and generation models offers a new entry point.

Runway publicly stated that users can create chart animations, customer guides, or short explanations with Claude Motion, then import them into Runway to generate final videos and images.

Previously, Anthropic expanded Claude's capabilities through Artifacts and code generation; this time, it introduces animation as a code product, continuing its path towards editable outputs. Runway, on the other hand, extends from pure generative video models to a combination with structured content, becoming one of the launch partners for Motion.

The two companies connect precise structures defined by code with pixel generation capabilities through export and MCP integration, allowing enterprises to achieve accurate motion effects and visual enhancements within the same workflow, reducing the risk of errors in numbers and text associated with pure generative models.

This is similar to the traditional animation process of creating storyboards before rendering, and aligns with the current trend of AI tools moving from single generation to layered collaboration; the production of explanatory videos is transitioning from "fully generated" or "fully manual" to "code structure + generative filling".

Essentially, this represents a restructuring of the industry chain, where the code layer is responsible for verifiable structure and data, and the generation layer is responsible for visual representation. Tools interconnect through export and agent interfaces, making it difficult for a single model to cover all needs, while combined solutions become the new default path.

ABAB News · Cognitive Laws

  1. In scenarios where accuracy is crucial, code animation precedes pixel generation.

  2. The structural layer provides the framework, while the pixel layer fills in the performance, complementing each other after layering.

  3. Outputs that can be modified individually are more suitable for iterative work than regenerating the whole.
