Amazon Plans to Invest Over €16 Billion in Germany by 2027 for Cloud Computing, AI, Satellite Internet, and Media Business Expansion
Amazon plans to invest over €16 billion (approximately $18 billion) in Germany by 2027 to expand its cloud computing, AI, satellite internet, and media businesses.
Of this, €4.8 billion will be used to expand the AWS Frankfurt cloud region and AI infrastructure. Additional investments include new logistics projects (expected to create over 3,000 jobs), the development of the Amazon Leo satellite broadband network, and new content production for Prime Video.
The company will also open a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin. Since 2010, Amazon has invested over €100 billion in Germany, with this announcement made at the "Invest in Germany Summit" in Berlin.
Amazon Leo will collaborate with Arianespace for 24 rocket launches to deploy a low-orbit satellite network, providing high-speed internet coverage to areas not served by traditional networks. Prime Video plans to release over 15 German local productions by the end of 2027.
Previously, in June 2024, the company announced a €10 billion investment (including €8.8 billion for AWS data centers). Amazon has created over 40,000 permanent jobs in Germany, with about 3,000 in AWS.
Funding is being directed towards cloud, AI, and logistics infrastructure in Europe's largest economy, driven by growing AI demand and regional competition; capital is flowing into AWS data centers, satellites, and content production, benefiting Amazon and local suppliers, while traditional infrastructure and competitors' satellite projects face pressure.

Amazon has cumulatively invested over €100 billion in Germany since 2010, continuously increasing its investment in the AWS Frankfurt region and logistics in recent years. The planned investment of over €16 billion by 2027 is a further expansion following the €10 billion commitment announced for 2024; the historical path includes building its own data centers rather than just leasing, along with satellite and localized content.
Capital is primarily directed towards AWS Frankfurt cloud and AI infrastructure (€4.8 billion), Amazon Leo low-orbit satellites (in collaboration with Arianespace for 24 launches), and logistics modernization and Prime Video German productions. The motivation is to meet the growing demand for AI and cloud in Europe while positioning satellites as an alternative to Starlink and enhancing local content to boost subscriptions.
This is similar to the large-scale investments by Google and Microsoft in European data centers and the satellite deployment path of SpaceX Starlink; currently, Amazon is in a phase of rapid expansion of cloud and AI infrastructure while integrating multiple business lines into the same market through satellites and content.
Essentially, this represents capital concentration and industrial chain restructuring: large tech companies are locking in European cloud and connectivity capabilities through massive infrastructure investments, shifting pricing power and data sovereignty to players with their own data centers and satellite networks; Germany gains jobs and infrastructure, while competitors relying on external infrastructure and traditional broadband operators face pressure.
