Microsoft Copilot Major Update Launches Sustainable Operating Agent
Microsoft has released a redesigned Copilot application, divided into Home, Code, and Autopilot sections. CEO Satya Nadella referred to it as a new operating system for work. Autopilot, formerly known as Scout, is officially defined as a persistent, proactive, personalized agent that continues to work even when the user is away.
Each Autopilot instance has an independent identity, memory, cloud computer, and workspace within the tenant, understands organizational operations based on Microsoft IQ, and can be @mentioned in Teams, Outlook, channels, and documents, with permissions, auditing, and governance. It can monitor channels, follow up on posts, run periodic tasks, pick up projects after several days, and independently advance vendor reviews: scheduling, pre-meeting preparation, meetings, and pushing progress to stakeholders. The agent uses Entra identity and can be configured with email, calendar, OneDrive, and organizational structure location.
Code generates applications, dashboards, and automation using natural language, sharing the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, and operates in a sandbox and Copilot Managed Runtime. Home integrates conversations and delegable tasks into a single entry point and brings Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into the Copilot application. Home and Code will be launched in the coming weeks through the Frontier program; Autopilot will have a private preview at the end of this month, with Code later available to Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro users.
Billing has changed to a dual-layer system: daily AI will still be charged monthly per user subscription; long-term unattended agents, workflows, and frontier models will be billed based on usage, utilizing Copilot Credits. Advanced capabilities are built on top of subscriptions. Microsoft claims the enterprise agent market could be larger than the cloud computing market.
In market mechanics, the buyer is enterprise IT locked into the Windows and Microsoft 365 distribution channels, while the seller is Microsoft, bundling entry, identity, and cloud computers into an agent layer. Events are driven by product releases, with revenue stacking from seat subscriptions to ongoing consumption of tokens in the background; beneficiaries are platforms that control both the operating system entry and usage billing, while pressured companies only sell chat windows and cannot continue billing when users are offline.

Microsoft upgrades the chat window into a digital colleague that occupies a position within the organizational structure. Scout is renamed Autopilot, not just a rebranding, but transforming the agent from "you ask, it answers" to "you set the goals, it continues working in the cloud." Windows and 365 provide distribution, Entra provides identity, and Azure provides the always-on computer.
The capital path is to cover daily usage with subscriptions while usage billing consumes offline operations. The agent continues to read channels, write follow-ups, and burn tokens while people sleep, decoupling billing from working hours. This increases single customer revenue faster than selling more seats and shifts AI monetization from per-head to per-background runtime. Nadella calls the product a work operating system, effectively collecting the entry tax for Office again.
Similar paths include AWS turning idle computing into continuous billing, Salesforce charging for seat bots per conversation, and OpenAI transforming Codex and agents from conversations to tasks. Microsoft is in a control period transitioning from plugin chat to operating system-level agents, and its distribution capability allows it to deploy agents into existing workflows faster than pure model companies.
Structurally, this is a technological substitution. The mechanism is that per-conversation billing has a cap, while persistent agents remove that cap: work continues to happen even when people are not present, shifting costs from payroll to cloud billing. Pricing power shifts from "who has the smarter model" to "who can continue to operate legally and bill after you leave."

Agents that continue running after people leave are the true billing engines.
Entry points determine who can sell agents as operating systems before models.
Subscriptions lock in people, while usage billing locks in unattended time.
