Shopify Revamps Backend and Prioritizes Sidekick, AI Assistant Sidekick Now Easily Accessible When Needed

Shopify employee Katarina Batina showcased the new look of the backend management interface: key workflow navigation has been simplified, and the AI assistant Sidekick is now positioned for easy access when needed. CEO Tobi Lütke shared the post. The official update log states that starting September 15, new colors, fonts, spacing, and icons will be gradually rolled out, with search, notifications, and store switching moved to a collapsible sidebar, and Sidekick transitioning from the sidebar to a floating chat at the bottom of each page.

Merchants do not need to set anything up; it will be rolled out based on store gradation. Applications using the admin UI extension or app home UI extension will automatically adopt the new styles; applications rendering their own app home will maintain the old appearance until they migrate to Polaris 2.0. Conflicts have arisen in the developer community: the embedded chat application Fudge claims that the permanently located Sidekick input box overlaps with its own chat box, making it difficult for merchants to know which assistant to talk to.

Sidekick will enter the backend in 2024, with features like Pulse proactive suggestions, theme editor settings, backend tasks, mobile editor, Apple Watch voice, and previews of app extensions open to third parties added in 2025-2026. According to Q1 financial reports: weekly active stores using Sidekick increased by approximately 385% year-on-year, with over 12,000 custom applications generated in a single quarter; about 42% of merchants have used Sidekick or Magic. The application generation feature will be available for Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans starting April 2026, after the Basic trial period ends. Pulse requires network intelligence to be enabled and is not available for all stores.

The assistant can check data, write ShopifyQL, modify products and orders, generate copy and images, and automate flows. Theme side can only modify existing block settings and cannot write theme code or create new landing pages. Changes require merchant confirmation, and themes must be manually saved. These features are included in paid plans and are not charged separately. Lütke also personally funded Horowitz Andreessen Academy, with the backend revamp coinciding with the narrative of the "next-generation business interface."

Mechanically, what is being bought is the attention of merchants who open the backend daily, while what is being sold are the old menus deep in the sidebar and third-party independent chat plugins. The event-driven design system upgrade aims to make the assistant the default input method. Funding comes from subscription fees to maintain the free assistant, resulting in shorter operation paths and more application generation; benefiting are the official workflows and open interface applications that can be called by Sidekick, while dialogue applications competing for the same screen space as the floating box are under pressure. The pixels freed up by collapsing navigation are used to place the platform's own assistant, rather than adding another application icon.

Shopify has transformed the backend from a "feature directory" to an "assistant plus workflow". Lütke sharing the employee post equates to framing a visual update as a business interface upgrade. The migration of Sidekick from the sidebar to being pinned at the bottom of all pages represents an operating system-level entry migration: merchants no longer need to remember menus, just know how to type. The 385% increase in weekly activity and over 12,000 generated applications in a single quarter indicate that the assistant has evolved from a demonstration feature to a usage metric. For developers, the automatic skin change in Polaris is a carrot, while the permanently located input box is a stick—embedded AI applications suddenly find the platform's assistant sitting on their lap.

The capital path is to subsidize the assistant with subscription revenue, which in turn locks merchants into the backend to perform tasks that would typically require plugins: changing discounts, writing descriptions, building flows, and querying data. The generation of applications closing off lower-tier plans treats AI capacity as a differentiator for Plus. Pulse proactively suggesting tasks changes the first screen upon opening the backend from reports to to-dos. If third parties hand over data and actions to Sidekick extensions, they can thrive in conversations; if they insist on their own chat boxes, they compete for pixels with the platform.

This is analogous to Microsoft embedding Copilot into Office's functionality, Salesforce integrating Einstein into every record, and iOS making Siri a system input: all platforms are incorporating plugins through default entry points. The difference is that Shopify's merchants are a highly dense group of developers, with the backend serving as both an operating system and an app store. The industry phase is shifting from app store shelves to "who can call whom with a question". Whoever can become the action behind Sidekick will remain on the shelf.

Structural judgment belongs to the technical replacement layered with a transfer of pricing power. Pricing power has shifted from application icons and search ads to default routing in conversations. The mechanism is that merchants have limited time, and only one permanent input box can be placed at the bottom of each page; the platform reserves that box for its own assistant, while third parties must either integrate extensions or accept confusion from dual boxes. The next-generation business interface first grows in the backend, rather than in the storefront theme.

  1. The true purpose of platform skin changes is to pin the assistant on all pages.

  2. Only one input box can be placed at the bottom; the default route is the new shelf.

  3. Once application generation is tiered by plans, AI becomes a reason for renewal.
