1、First, the meaning of “founder” and the present control structure must be clarified

The Straits Times and The Business Times cannot be understood through the same founder-family-succession model.

The Straits Times traces its origin to 15 July 1845. The National Library Board’s recent history for the newspaper’s 180th anniversary identifies Catchick Moses and Robert Carr Woods together as its founders. Moses was the Armenian merchant who assembled the commercial resources and printing equipment, while Woods was the English journalist from Bombay who became the first editor. The most precise description, therefore, is that Moses was the commercial initiator and resource provider, while Woods was the founding editor and operational newspaper builder.

The Business Times has a very different origin. It was not an independently capitalised newspaper founded by an individual entrepreneur. It was developed inside the institutional system of Straits Times Press and its successors, eventually SPH. SPH Media describes BT as Singapore’s first financial daily, launched in 1976. Tsai Tan led the original editorial team, so if one needs to associate BT with an individual founding figure, the most accurate term is founding editor, not private owner-founder.

Neither newspaper is now owned by descendants of its founders, and neither is controlled by a newspaper dynasty. On 1 December 2021, the media business of Singapore Press Holdings Limited was transferred into SPH Media Trust, a company limited by guarantee operating on a not-for-profit basis. A CLG does not have conventional equity shareholders whose stakes can be inherited by a controlling family. SPH Media Limited serves as its operating company.

The broad institutional trajectory is therefore:

nineteenth-century merchant/editor entrepreneurship → corporatisation of newspapers → multilingual SPH media conglomerate → deterioration of the listed-media economic model → 2021 media spin-off → not-for-profit operation under SPH Media Trust.

2、Catchick Moses: the commercial initiator of The Straits Times

Historical research indicates that Catchick Moses was born on 30 August 1812 in Basra, then part of the Ottoman sphere and now in Iraq. He belonged to the Armenian mercantile diaspora that was active across Indian Ocean trading routes. On 1 August 1828, shortly before his sixteenth birthday, he arrived in Singapore. His already established uncle, Aristarkies Sarkies, helped secure him employment as a clerk at Boustead & Company.

That background is essential. Moses was not primarily a professional publisher emerging from an established mass-media industry. He was first a merchant operating within the information-intensive economy of a colonial port. Singapore was becoming a trading node connecting India, China, Southeast Asia and Europe, where shipping information, commodity prices, commercial intelligence and credit were themselves valuable goods. The original title, The Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce, reflected precisely that environment.

After about five years at Boustead, Moses traded on his own and developed links with Calcutta. In March 1840, he formed Sarkies & Moses with his uncle. Sarkies soon relinquished his interest and Moses ran the firm for decades. He also invested substantially in property and held shares in enterprises including the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company. His principal economic base was therefore commerce, property, port-related business and merchant networks—not journalism alone.

Reliable public English-language sources do not provide a full account of his parents, the exact wealth of his childhood household, or his formal schooling: 公开资料有限 / 说法不一 / 暂无法确认.

What is much clearer is that his early resources came from his uncle and the Armenian mercantile network. Despite its small size, Singapore’s Armenian community played a disproportionately visible role in commerce and civic life, and Moses eventually became one of its prominent figures.

His later life also demonstrates substantial social advancement. In 1874 he moved into The Pavilion on Oxley Hill, a major residence. Singapore’s National Heritage Board records that members of his family continued living there after his death. Official heritage material places his death in 1892, while the Daily Advertiser of 3 October 1892 confirms that he died at The Pavilion on 2 October 1892.

3、Why did a merchant launch The Straits Times?

The newspaper arose partly from contingency rather than a grand long-term media plan.

The National Library Board’s anniversary history explains that Armenian merchant Marterus Thaddeus Apcar had ordered printing equipment from England. One tradition says that Apcar wanted to launch an English newspaper; historian C. M. Turnbull argued that the machinery may instead have been intended to print Armenian books. Following Apcar’s death and the collapse of Apcar & Stephens in 1845, Moses acquired the equipment and hired Robert Carr Woods to edit a new publication.

In other words, three resources converged:

available printing machinery + an Armenian merchant with business networks + an English journalist with newspaper experience.

The first issue appeared on 15 July 1845 at No. 7 Commercial Square, in today’s Raffles Place area. It was initially an eight-folio-page weekly, appearing on Tuesdays. It was not Singapore’s first newspaper—the Singapore Chronicle had appeared as early as 1824.

This also explains why Moses never became Singapore’s equivalent of a Hearst or Murdoch. Publishing was not his most successful commercial activity. The Straits Times increased its frequency within months, but by the end of its first year Woods had failed to convince Moses that it was commercially viable. Moses attempted to dispose of the newspaper in 1846 and initially attracted no buyer.

Sources differ slightly over whether Moses formally “sold,” “transferred,” or effectively gave the title to Woods, but they agree on the fundamental point: around 1846, Moses exited and Woods acquired control of the struggling paper. The founder’s family ownership therefore ended almost immediately after the publication’s creation.

Moses’s most consequential legacy was thus not the creation of an inherited newspaper dynasty. It was the conversion of a set of printing and commercial resources into an institution that ultimately survived for more than 180 years.

4、Robert Carr Woods: the man who turned the launch into an operating newspaper

Robert Carr Woods was born in England on 31 July 1816 and died in Singapore on 16 March 1875. Unlike Moses, his career was not primarily mercantile. It moved among scientific instrumentation, journalism, law and colonial public life.

His earliest known occupation was making meteorological instruments. He joined London’s Meteorological Society, becoming its registrar and a council member in 1838. He experimented with a massive barometer and devised an improved thermometer that could be read more easily at night.

Woods directly shaped the editorial character of the new paper. Seeking to distinguish it from the more staid Singapore Free Press, he introduced short stories, humour and, crucially, foreign news. The arrival of more regular steamship and mail links made overseas information more accessible; technological and transport infrastructure therefore helped make his editorial strategy possible.

His style also drew ridicule for being flowery and overly jocular. The publication’s first branding strategy—being livelier than its competitor—simultaneously created differentiation and controversy.

When Woods inherited the loss-making title, he quickly discovered that subscriptions alone were insufficient. He diversified the printing press into other products. The Straits Times Almanack, Calendar and Directory, issued in 1846, is described by the National Library Board as Singapore’s first directory. This amounted to an early media-diversification strategy: when news did not pay enough, the underlying printing infrastructure was monetised in other ways.

In 1849, Woods also registered as a law agent because journalism generated inadequate income. In 1861, he and James Guthrie Davidson founded Woods & Davidson, described by the NLB as Singapore’s first law firm. He qualified professionally through Gray’s Inn in 1863 and later served as Acting Attorney-General and, briefly, a senior judge.

His position can therefore be summarised as:

founding editor + small-media operator + printing entrepreneur + political campaigner + lawyer and colonial civic figure.

He did not build immense wealth from journalism. Rather, his multi-career life illustrates just how fragile the business of a small colonial newspaper could be.

Institutionalisation, The Business Times, and Asset Evolution

5、From commercial weekly to national media institution

One of the first major transitions for The Straits Times was its gradual increase in publication frequency and its conversion into a daily in 1858. Woods eventually sold the newspaper around 1860. That marked its transition from a founder-dependent venture into a media asset capable of surviving changes of ownership.

Its audience and editorial orientation also changed over time. The phrase “Journal of Commerce” in the original name reflected its colonial mercantile clientele. National Heritage Board material notes that after the Second World War the paper gradually moved away from its earlier pro-British commercial orientation and gave greater attention to local issues, ultimately becoming Singapore’s dominant English-language newspaper.

The Japanese occupation created a profound interruption. After Singapore fell in February 1942, The Straits Times disappeared and its facilities were used by the Japanese authorities for the Shonan Times and its later renamed successors. After Japan’s surrender, Straits Times staff resumed publication on 7 September 1945, printing around 10,000 copies even before the British Military Administration had authorised the newspaper to use scarce newsprint.

Its brand value therefore derives from more than its 1845 founding date. The paper survived British colonialism, Japanese occupation, postwar decolonisation, political restructuring in Malaya, Singaporean independence, industrialisation, the internet transition and the structural decline of print. Individual founders disappeared from the story relatively quickly; the institution itself adapted repeatedly.

6、The Business Times: professional specialisation inside an established newspaper system

The Business Times emerged from a radically different economy.

By the 1970s Singapore was becoming a manufacturing, banking, securities and multinational-business centre. SPH Media says The Business Times was launched in 1976 to meet growing demand for financial and business information, becoming Singapore’s first financial daily.

Its archive begins on 1 October 1976, with Times Business Publications identified as publisher. Early promotional material described a newspaper carrying essential local and international news with a particular focus on the environment for doing business.

The distinction between “founder” and “founding editor” is important.

There is no strong public evidence for an individual capitalist founder comparable to Moses. BT was an institutional product of the existing Straits Times organisation. Therefore Tsai Tan should not be described as its equity owner; she is more accurately its first or founding editor. Contemporary coverage highlighted her as a highly unusual female leader of a financial daily and portrayed her appointment as a significant first.

In a column shortly after launch, Tsai recalled that the team had spent roughly eleven months getting the newspaper off the ground, evidence that BT was a substantial editorial and organisational build rather than simply a renamed supplement.

Before the formal launch, Tsai already had substantial experience covering business and finance. Straits Times material from 1975 identified her as City Editor while she reported on foreign takeovers and financial regulation, and other pre-launch articles were already carrying the Business Times Editor designation.

Her historical significance lies principally in her role as a professional editor, not as a media proprietor.

7、BT’s deeper achievement: becoming infrastructure for the business community

BT’s moat is not simply its ability to report stock prices or company announcements. It increasingly embedded itself in the information, reputation, events and awards architecture of Singapore’s business community.

Today, BT describes itself as a financial daily covering Southeast Asian and global markets, with corporate reporting, market commentary and cross-border insight alongside wealth management, property, startups, lifestyle and enterprise coverage. It explicitly portrays its evolution as a move from Singaporean roots towards a pan-regional publication.

BT was also unusually early online. SPH’s official history states that Business Times Online launched in January 1994 and became the first English-language newspaper in Asia to go online. The Straits Times Interactive followed in December 1995. Within its own group, therefore, the specialist financial publication served as an early digital laboratory.

Its second major network is awards and corporate events. The Singapore Business Awards began in 1985, followed by the Enterprise Award in 1986. Enterprise 50 was launched in 1995, the Emerging Enterprise Award in 2008, the Sustainability Impact Awards in 2023 with UOB and an NUS Business School centre as knowledge partner, and Design AI and Tech Awards in 2024 with SUTD.

These activities make BT more than a publication. It functions as a:

business-information provider, corporate-reputation platform, convener of CEOs and investors, event organiser, sponsorship channel and connector among business, policy and academia.

BT also adopted the Business Times Budding Artists Fund in 2005. SPH says its programmes have reached more than 9,000 beneficiaries. The fund is not primarily a profit-generating asset; it is better understood as social capital and a brand-influence asset.

8、The creation of SPH in 1984 placed both newspapers inside a common media system

The decisive modern corporate date is 1984.

Singapore Press Holdings Limited was incorporated in August 1984 as a public company. At incorporation it published seven newspapers in three languages, including The Straits Times, The Business Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Berita Harian, Shin Min Daily News, Lianhe Wanbao and Singapore Monitor.

The significance was structural. The Straits Times became the flagship of a multilingual publishing system, while BT served the specialised financial and corporate audience within the same infrastructure.

The portfolio continued to expand. Tamil Murasu entered the group in the 1990s; student and digital publishing grew; SPH moved into radio; MONEY FM 89.3 launched in 2018 as Singapore’s first business radio station; and SPH Media acquired Tech in Asia in January 2024 to deepen its regional technology and business-news capabilities.

ST and BT are therefore best understood as complementary assets:

ST supplies broad general-news scale and national/international reach; BT targets high-value business, capital-market and professional audiences.

9、Why the listed-company model was abandoned in 2021

The 2021 restructuring was the most consequential modern institutional turning point.

SPH explicitly cited the unavoidable secular decline of traditional print media and argued that the listed-company model was no longer the best structure for sustaining quality journalism. The central problem was not that the brands suddenly lost all audiences. Rather, print circulation and advertising economics were increasingly unable to finance the fixed costs of major newsrooms while public-market shareholders still expected financial returns.

On 1 December 2021, approximately 2,500 media employees, the relevant media businesses, News Centre and Print Centre leasehold interests, intellectual property and IT assets were transferred into SPH Media Trust. The former SPH also injected S$80 million in cash and approximately S$30 million worth of SPH shares and SPH REIT units into the media companies.

SMT therefore did not merely receive two newspaper trademarks. It inherited a complete news-production infrastructure: newsrooms, journalists, printing-related assets, digital systems, IP, brands, subscriptions, advertiser relationships, distribution capabilities and human capital.

This is why calling SMT simply “the parent company of The Straits Times” understates its role. It is more accurately the not-for-profit institutional container for a substantial portion of Singapore’s newspaper-news infrastructure.

10、Who actually “owns” SPH Media Trust?

Because SMT is a company limited by guarantee, it has no ordinary equity shareholders whose percentage stakes determine control in the conventional corporate sense. Governance is exercised through members, the board and management.

Its official list currently contains 16 institutional members: DBS, UOB, OCBC, Great Eastern, Singtel, CapitaLand Investment, Changi Airport Group, PSA International, Mapletree Investments, Fullerton, Income Insurance, NTUC Enterprise, NUS, NTU, SMU and SUTD. SPH Media describes these members as custodians who exercise votes on important governance matters and contribute strategic perspectives.

The composition is notable: Singapore’s major banks, insurance, telecommunications, port and airport infrastructure, investment/property groups, labour-linked organisations and universities all appear.

SMT is consequently neither:

a family-controlled newspaper holding company,

nor:

a private-equity-controlled media vehicle or billionaire proprietor model.

A more precise description is a not-for-profit media institution governed through institutional members, a board and professional management, operating within Singapore’s newspaper regulatory framework and supported by substantial public funding.

Its chairman, Khaw Boon Wan, spent 42 years in Singapore’s public service and Cabinet, including as Health, National Development and Transport Minister. CEO Chan Yeng Kit previously served as Permanent Secretary for Health and held permanent-secretary roles connected with defence and information/communications.

Those backgrounds are an important part of the debate over the media organisation’s proximity to the state. But the fact that senior executives have public-sector backgrounds is not the same proposition as saying that government officials dictate each article. The Singapore government’s stated position is that MDDI does not set editorial policy, and that its funding conditions concern reach, engagement, technology and vernacular-media capabilities rather than individual editorial decisions.

11、The present business model: subscriptions, advertising, marketing, events and public support

Not-for-profit does not mean non-commercial.

SPH Media continues to sell subscriptions, print and digital advertising, content marketing, outdoor advertising and cross-platform marketing solutions. It says its network contains more than 40 brands. Its marketing page reports a combined online/offline weekly Singapore reach of about 3.1 million, around 110 million average monthly digital page views, and approximately 12.7 million social followers across four languages. Crucially, the page identifies parts of those underlying measurements as coming from 2022 audience/comScore studies and 2024 social-media data, so they should not be represented as real-time audited 2026 figures.

The organisation also markets a network of more than 10,000 out-of-home displays, allowing advertisers to buy combinations of print, digital, radio, social and physical outdoor inventory.

BT’s B2B economics are particularly visible. Its website markets print and digital advertising, advertorial and content-marketing services, paid press releases, event sponsorship and custom solutions. BT therefore monetises not just “readership” but access to the attention of business decision-makers.

The transformational new layer is public funding.

In 2022, the Singapore government announced support of up to S$180 million annually for five years. It initially expected about 40% of that support to fund technology and digital talent, with the balance supporting newsroom capabilities, training and especially vernacular newsrooms. Performance monitoring focuses on reach, digital engagement, youth and vernacular audiences, and product resilience.

For FY2024, however, MDDI disclosed that it had provided S$260.6 million to SMT and budgeted another S$28.9 million of performance-linked incentives, conditional on KPIs. That appears higher than the original 2022 headline of “up to S$180 million annually.” MDDI said the FY2024 amount was in accordance with the “current funding agreement,” but the public documents cited here do not fully reconcile the two figures on a like-for-like basis. The economic transition can be simplified as follows:

Old model: circulation + advertising → profits and returns within a listed company.

Current model: subscriptions + advertising + events/marketing + digital commercial revenue + public funding → maintenance of newsroom capacity and digital transformation under a not-for-profit structure.

Turning Points, Achievements, Controversies, and Present Influence

12、The decisive turning points

The first was Moses’s decision in 1845 to take over the printing equipment and hire Woods. An accidental physical asset became the foundation of a durable institution.

The second was Moses’s exit and Woods’s assumption of the struggling newspaper around 1846. Had Woods simply closed the operation, the paper might have become one of countless short-lived colonial titles. His willingness to diversify printing activities and maintain other professions helped keep it alive.

The third was the 1858 transition to daily publication, which transformed the title from periodic information into everyday information infrastructure.

The fourth was its rapid postwar revival in 1945, preserving institutional continuity after the Japanese occupation.

The fifth was the 1976 launch of The Business Times, which segmented the group’s product strategy by building a specialist publication for high-value financial and corporate audiences.

The sixth was the 1984 creation of SPH, when scale economies across multilingual newsrooms, printing, advertising, distribution and technology became a central competitive advantage.

The seventh was digitalisation in 1994–95, with BT going online first and ST following.

The eighth was the 2021 exit from the listed-company media model, shifting journalism from a business expected to deliver conventional shareholder returns towards a public-interest activity sustained through a combination of commercial revenue and public support.

The ninth is the more recent regional expansion strategy, including the 2024 acquisition of Tech in Asia, which strengthens the group’s ability to connect BT-style business coverage with Southeast Asian technology, startups and capital markets.

13、What are the most important achievements?

The Straits Times’ most remarkable achievement is not merely surviving for more than 180 years. It is its institutional transformation:

from a small colonial commercial weekly created by an Armenian merchant and an English editor into one of the principal English-language news institutions of a modern city-state.

Its deepest asset is institutional memory. Large parts of Singapore’s political, economic and social history have been documented in its archives. One can dispute the paper’s editorial positions and still recognise that serious research on modern Singapore frequently intersects with its historical record.

The Business Times occupies a different strategic niche. Rather than mass readership, it has built a specialised network around corporations, capital markets, real estate, wealth management, startups and economic policy, supplemented by awards and events that turn an audience into a professional community.

Its 1994 internet launch is also historically significant. According to SPH, BT became Asia’s first English-language newspaper online, demonstrating how a specialised financial audience—with high demands for speed and information density—could make a financial paper an unusually early digital adopter.

At group level, the broader achievement is the creation of a multilingual portfolio spanning English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil journalism, later extended into digital products, radio, social media, events and outdoor media. SPH Media continues to describe The Straits Times as its flagship English daily and BT as Singapore’s only financial daily.

14、Early controversy: Woods showed that powerful editors could also make serious errors

The Straits Times did not begin life with uncontested authority.

In 1846, merchants deliberately fed the newspaper fabricated information concerning Calcutta opium-sale prices. Woods published the information before discovering that it was false and subsequently offered a reward to identify the person responsible. The National Library Board includes the episode in its anniversary history as an early Singapore example of “fake news.”

More consequential was the James Brooke controversy.

Beginning in 1849, Woods used The Straits Times to campaign against Sarawak ruler James Brooke, alleging that a military action presented as anti-piracy had in reality killed peaceful traders. Woods helped press London for an investigation. Brooke was ultimately exonerated, while some signatories to Woods’s petition later said they had been misled. Woods made numerous enemies through the affair.

The episode captures both sides of Woods’s importance. He transformed the newspaper from a commercial information sheet into an institution capable of political agenda-setting, but he simultaneously demonstrated the dangers of mixing personal antagonism, editorial judgment and institutional media power.

15、The major modern internal credibility crisis: overstated circulation

The circulation controversy revealed in 2023 became one of the most significant corporate-governance crises of the SPH Media transition.

An internal review identified material problems in historical circulation reporting, with the authorities later referring to approximately 82,600 average daily copies in August 2021, roughly 10% of main-title circulation, as being overstated. Practices examined included copies printed and then destroyed, duplicate counting and problematic transaction arrangements. The review period ran from September 2020 to March 2022, spanning the December 2021 institutional restructuring.

The problem was especially sensitive because the organisation had just moved into a publicly supported not-for-profit model, and audience reach was central to the discussion of public value and performance targets. External audits and controls were subsequently strengthened.

The final legal outcome must, however, be stated precisely.

After SPH Media lodged a police report in June 2023, Singapore Police investigated former and current employees and directors for possible offences including falsification of accounts and cheating. On 29 April 2026, the Singapore Police Force announced, after consultation with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, that there was no basis for bringing criminal charges and no further action would be taken.

The accurate conclusion as of September 2026 is therefore:

SPH did acknowledge serious circulation-measurement and process problems that created a genuine governance and credibility crisis; however, the subsequent criminal investigation ended without charges because police found no basis to prosecute.

It would be inaccurate to continue describing the matter as a criminal fraud that has been judicially established.

16、The central structural controversy: public funding, state proximity and editorial independence

This remains the most consequential debate surrounding The Straits Times and SPH Media today.

The government’s position is explicit. MDDI says it does not determine the editorial policy of news outlets. Public funding is directed towards talent, technology and vernacular-media capabilities, with KPIs centred on reach and engagement rather than particular editorial decisions. The government argues that support is required to preserve professional local journalism as the traditional print business model deteriorates.

External assessments are substantially more critical.

A 2023 Reuters Institute study based partly on interviews with current and former SPH journalists and editors identified concerns including deference to authority in newsrooms, weak communication between journalists and editors, pressure on journalistic standards, and growing influence from government communications teams. Importantly, senior SPH editorial figures interviewed for the research did not simply concede that editors obey government instructions. One argued that journalists themselves sometimes failed to push hard enough and that editors continued to exercise professional judgment.

Reporters Without Borders takes a much harsher view of Singapore’s overall press environment. In its 2026 World Press Freedom Index, Singapore ranked 123rd of 180, and RSF continues to criticise legal and political constraints on independent journalism.

Both sides of the evidence should therefore be preserved:

The government and SPH side maintain that editorial judgment remains independent; external press-freedom organisations and some practitioners argue that law, state relationships, public funding and newsroom culture create meaningful structural constraints.

The available evidence does not justify reducing this complex structure either to “SPH is simply a government propaganda arm” or to “state funding has no conceivable structural relationship with editorial conditions.”

17、The striking paradox: weak press-freedom rankings, but high domestic brand trust

International press-freedom assessments and domestic audience trust produce very different pictures.

The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026 records overall trust in news in Singapore at 46%, compared with a global average of 37% in that report. At brand level, CNA scored 78% and The Straits Times 77%, placing ST among Singapore’s most trusted news brands.

At the same time, news consumption is heavily digital. In the 2026 data, 87% used online sources for news, 59% used social media, while print had declined to 17%. Only 17% reported paying for online news.

Those figures illuminate the economic rationale for SMT:

The Straits Times can retain considerable social influence and brand trust without converting enough of that influence into direct digital payments to finance the full cost structure of a large legacy newsroom.

Its problem is therefore not simply brand failure. It is the broader legacy-media problem of a widening gap between social value and commercial monetisation.

18、Current position and real-world influence as of 2026

As of September 2026, The Straits Times remains SPH Media’s flagship general-interest English news brand. The Business Times is led by editor Chen Huifen and explicitly targets Southeast Asian finance, corporate affairs and cross-border markets. Both operate within the broader SPH Media editorial and corporate infrastructure.

The Straits Times’ present value can be understood on four levels.

First, it is a mass-news asset, retaining one of Singapore’s strongest legacy English-language news brands and unusually high measured brand trust.

Second, it is an archive and institutional-memory asset. More than 180 years of existence gives it unusual historical depth.

Third, it functions as a major information node used across government, business, diplomacy, academia and the broader public, regardless of disagreements over its editorial orientation.

Fourth, it is increasingly intended as a regional digital brand, as SPH Media seeks to reduce dependence on Singapore’s shrinking print economy through digital products, regional reporting and complementary business/technology assets.

The Business Times occupies a more specialised position: it is a high-value professional network. Its importance does not depend on matching ST’s mass audience. Its strategic value lies in reaching executives, boards, investors, professional services, banks, property groups, wealth managers and entrepreneurs, and then extending editorial influence through awards, events, sponsorships and professional communities.

The most accurate description of SPH Media Trust itself is therefore:

not a traditional private newspaper family; not a conventional listed media conglomerate; and not simply a charitable foundation. It is a not-for-profit national media infrastructure governed through institutional members and professional management, retaining substantial commercial revenue activities while receiving large-scale public financial support.

The most important historical lesson from Catchick Moses to the present is therefore almost the opposite of a family-media dynasty narrative.

Moses supplied the conditions for the original launch. Woods turned a failing experiment into a surviving journalistic institution. The founders then disappeared relatively quickly from the ownership story. Their place was progressively taken by corporations, professional editors, regulatory structures, national institutions, commercial networks and—most recently—publicly supported not-for-profit governance.

That is the real evolution of power behind The Straits Times and The Business Times.
