1. The first distinction is essential: the Ochs–Sulzberger family did not originally found The New York Times.

The commercial objective is a relationship far deeper than “read today’s headlines.”

31. Ochs’s greatest accomplishment was not personal wealth. It was turning a distressed newspaper into an inheritable credibility institution.

When he took control in 1896, the Times was struggling. NYPL credits his nearly four decades of leadership with building an international reputation for objective and trustworthy reporting.

More importantly, the reputation survived him. His institutional principles were eventually embedded in the family trust governing control of the company.

From a business-history perspective, his most extraordinary achievement was therefore:

converting a personal operating philosophy into organizational capital capable of surviving for more than a century.

32. Two landmark legal battles during the Arthur Ochs “Punch” Sulzberger era gave the Times influence far beyond the newspaper business.

investigative capacity;

agenda-setting power;

and professional prestige.

The company states in its 2025 10-K that the Times has received more Pulitzer Prizes and citations than any other news organization.

These intangible assets may be more important to willingness to pay than anything that appears directly on a balance sheet.

43. The balance sheet also gives the company strategic freedom that many legacy publishers lack.

By mid-2026, the company had roughly billion-dollar-scale cash and marketable securities resources and no large conventional outstanding corporate debt burden.

That financial position gives it room to fund simultaneously:
