1、The first and most important correction is that Enda O’Coineen did not originally found the Business Post newspaper.

Today’s Business Post, originally called The Sunday Business Post, published its first issue on 26 November 1989. Its actual co-founders were Damien Kiberd, Aileen O’Toole, Frank Fitzgibbon and James Morrissey. Kiberd became the founding editor and remained editor until 2001.

Enda O’Coineen occupies a very different position in the history of the company. In 2018, through Kilcullen Kapital Partners, he acquired an existing newspaper that had already operated for nearly three decades, and subsequently built the modern Business Post Group together with Colm O’Reilly. The more accurate distinction is therefore:

Founders of the newspaper in 1989 = Kiberd, O’Toole, Fitzgibbon and Morrissey.

That distinction matters because O’Coineen’s most interesting contribution is not the creation of a newspaper from scratch. It is how he acquired a risky traditional media asset and subsequently built around it businesses in market research, data and insights, conferences and events, speakers, magazines and executive education, effectively turning a newspaper into a professional-information group serving business decision-makers. Business Post Group itself identifies 2018 as the formative year for the modern group and says subsequent growth came both organically and through acquisitions.

2、A second major update is equally important: as of August 2026, it is no longer accurate simply to describe Enda O’Coineen or Kilcullen as the controlling owner of Business Post Group. Control has materially changed.

In 2023, Sweden’s family-owned Bonnier media group, through Bonnier News Business, invested approximately €6 million in Business Post Group, obtaining a minority position and board representation. At that stage, O’Coineen remained the principal shareholder and controlling figure. Bonnier explicitly cited the opportunity to transfer expertise in digital subscriptions from titles such as Dagens industri and its other European business publications.

In June 2026, Bonnier announced that it would increase its ownership and become the majority owner of Business Post Group. Bonnier’s own announcement said O’Coineen would remain a “significant long-term minority shareholder.” Importantly, the transaction encompasses not merely the newspaper but subsidiaries active in events, analysis and research, and advanced executive education.

The Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commission subsequently cleared, on 13 July 2026, the acquisition by Bonnier Group AB through Bonnier News Business AB of sole control of Business Post Group Limited. In competition-law terms, this was therefore not simply another financial investment; it represented a transfer of control.

The most accurate structural interpretation as of 29 August 2026 is therefore:

Enda O’Coineen has moved from being Business Post Group’s controlling entrepreneurial shareholder to being a significant long-term minority shareholder, architect of the group’s transformation, and an important legacy strategic figure; Bonnier is becoming/has obtained the controlling position.

The transaction was initially reported as also requiring approval from Ireland’s Minister for Media. Public information clearly confirms CCPC clearance for sole control, while the precise post-completion registered share percentages and final public documentation of the separate media-approval process remain publicly limited / currently cannot be confirmed.

3、O’Coineen’s underlying identity is not that of a conventional newspaper proprietor, but of a risk-oriented entrepreneur operating across business creation, capital, financial information, communications, sailing and media.

O’Coineen was born in Galway in 1955. Some published biographies give the exact date as 15 October 1955, while stronger media-ownership profiles generally confirm only the year and place of birth; the exact-day sourcing is therefore somewhat less robust.

Reliable public information concerning his parents’ occupations, household income, social class, siblings and precise childhood economic circumstances is publicly limited / currently cannot be confirmed.

A recurring feature in biographies and O’Coineen’s own public narrative is the story that his great-grandfather joined the Klondike Gold Rush, subsequently returned to Galway and invested the proceeds in becoming a publican. The Irish News, in discussing O’Coineen’s memoir, linked that family story directly to the recurring theme of risk-taking in his life.

There is no evidence that O’Coineen’s modern fortune simply descended from this great-grandfather. The greater significance of the story is psychological and narrative: adventure, cross-border movement, uncertain bets, failure and renewed attempts repeatedly appear in how O’Coineen presents his own life.

The Royal Television Society similarly described the arc of his career as moving from rebellious schooldays and ocean adventure through entrepreneurship and eventually to the risky rescue of a troubled newspaper title.

4、His higher education was oriented toward business, management and finance rather than journalism.

Media Ownership Monitor records that O’Coineen studied Business at University College Galway; other biographies describe him as a graduate of National University of Ireland Galway in management and finance. The institution is now the University of Galway. The broad field is therefore clear, while the exact wording of the programme differs among biographies.

Public information concerning his graduation year, thesis, academic record, university mentors or a specific philosopher or economist who decisively shaped his thinking is publicly limited / currently cannot be confirmed.

Three broader environments, however, clearly intersect with his subsequent career.

The first was the difficult Irish economy of the 1980s, an era that features prominently in accounts of his early entrepreneurial years.

The second was the rapid market transition in Central and Eastern Europe after the collapse of the Communist system, which created opportunities in financial information, credit infrastructure, telecommunications, asset management and investment—precisely the areas into which Kilcullen moved.

The third was his long involvement in ocean sailing, which became more than a leisure pursuit: it became part of his public identity and reinforced his image as an entrepreneur comfortable with uncertainty and extreme problem-solving.

5、His media career did not begin with the 2018 Business Post acquisition; journalism and publishing had already been part of his professional life.

Business Post Group’s official biography states that O’Coineen worked as a journalist for The Irish Times and had experience in media and broadcasting.

He was also involved in establishing and publishing the sailing title Afloat. Older Kilcullen corporate material lists Afloat Magazine and Security World Magazine among his ventures and also refers to his involvement in Aquabroker insurance.

His acquisition of Business Post was therefore not simply the story of a financier suddenly entering media. A media strand had long existed in his career; the difference is that the principal source of his capital, transaction experience and financial power was built elsewhere—in finance, telecoms, restructuring and Central and Eastern European markets.

6、Kilcullen Kapital and O’Coineen’s Central and Eastern European experience created the capital and deal-making capability that later made the Business Post acquisition possible.

Kilcullen Kapital Partners says it was established by O’Coineen in Prague in the 1990s, acting as a co-founder and early investor in businesses spanning telecommunications, FinTech, fund management, real estate and retail. Media Ownership Monitor dates the origin to roughly 1990. The safest formulation is therefore that Kilcullen took shape around 1990/the early 1990s; public sources differ slightly on the exact date.

Older Kilcullen material lists ventures including Czech and Slovak Credit Bureaus, Globix Telecom/later eTel, Key 6 Recruitment, ASPEKT Kilcullen and ZPA. Because several of these businesses were subsequently sold, restructured or renamed, this historical portfolio should not be interpreted as a list of assets still owned today.

One venture is particularly important: Czech Credit Bureau. CRIF, the international credit-information group, explicitly describes O’Coineen as a founder of CCB. After CRIF acquired all the shares, he remained involved through an advisory board serving the Czech and Slovak credit bureaux.

There is a striking continuity between that experience and the later Business Post strategy.

Early in his career O’Coineen had already learned that information itself can function as commercial infrastructure: banks require credit information, companies need reliable market intelligence, and markets require data to make decisions. Decades later, the acquisitions of RED C, Relish and IMI extended essentially the same logic into business information, consumer insight and executive decision-making.

That is an analytical inference from his investment history rather than a formal doctrine he has publicly articulated.

7、Sailing amplified his public entrepreneurial identity.

In 2016, O’Coineen became the first Irish entrant in the Vendée Globe, the solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world yacht race. His boat was later dismasted near New Zealand, forcing him to retire from that edition of the race.

He subsequently returned to complete the interrupted circumnavigation and arrived at Les Sables-d’Olonne in April 2018. The office of the President of Ireland later recognised him as the first Irishman to complete such a solo round-the-world voyage.

The chronology is notable: he completed the circumnavigation in 2018 and acquired the Sunday Business Post in September of the same year.

It illustrates a recurring feature of his decision-making. He tends to enter situations not after uncertainty has disappeared, but while an asset or challenge is still difficult and potentially capable of being reconfigured.

8、The original creation of Business Post was a collective journalistic start-up by four Irish business-news professionals in the late 1980s.

The founding group brought complementary experience.

Damien Kiberd had held senior business-news roles at the Irish Press and Sunday Tribune and became founding editor.

Aileen O’Toole had edited Business & Finance and was one of the early women to reach senior editorial leadership in Irish business media.

Frank Fitzgibbon had significant business-journalism and editorial experience and later became a long-serving editor of the Irish edition of The Sunday Times.

James Morrissey was deputy business editor at the Irish Independent before co-founding the paper and later moving into public relations and strategic communications.

They created something broader than a narrow financial newspaper. Business Post covered companies and markets but also politics, policy, corruption and governance.

Media Ownership Monitor credits the paper with quickly establishing itself as an important voice in Irish business and politics, while reporting by journalists such as Frank Connolly became connected to major public inquiries including the Flood and Morris tribunals.

Business Post’s enduring influence asset was therefore never just circulation. It was agenda-setting credibility among Ireland’s business, financial, political and professional elites.

9、Yet the newspaper was never an easy commercial proposition.

The Irish Times has reported that although the paper was an editorial success in its early years, it struggled to generate sufficient advertising. Heavy losses and tensions within the founding group contributed to a crisis that included an emergency meeting with French shareholders around 1991.

That early history reveals a tension that has followed Business Post for decades:

high-quality business journalism can command substantial influence without automatically generating enough advertising or profit to sustain itself.

In 1997, the founders sold the Sunday Business Post to Trinity International/Trinity Mirror, in a deal generally estimated at approximately €7 million.

In 2002, Thomas Crosbie Holdings acquired it from Trinity Mirror for approximately €10 million as part of its wider newspaper expansion.

10、The global financial crisis and structural decline of print then pushed the title close to the edge.

Thomas Crosbie Holdings came under severe pressure after the 2008 financial crisis and entered examinership in 2013. Media Ownership Monitor records a decline in Business Post circulation from about 57,000 copies in 2009 to approximately 38,000 by 2013 and around 32,000 by 2015.

At the height of the crisis, annual revenue had fallen from roughly €15.3 million to €7.3 million over five years, while the paper was losing approximately €1.2 million a year and facing major restructuring.

In 2013, investors led by Key Capital ultimately acquired the business. Media Ownership Monitor puts the acquisition consideration at about €750,000, with a further commitment of approximately €500,000. After restructuring, the title returned to profitability by 2015.

This history helps explain the investment thesis that could have attracted O’Coineen in 2018.

Business Post was not an asset without value.

It had a strong brand, an unusually valuable professional readership, political and business influence, and decades of journalistic credibility. The problem was that the traditional newspaper model did not fully monetise those assets.

For an entrepreneur experienced in restructuring, cross-sector investments and attaching new businesses to an existing platform, that represented a classic transformation opportunity.

11、The 2018 acquisition was one of the defining capital-allocation decisions of O’Coineen’s later career.

In September 2018, Kilcullen Kapital Partners acquired Sunday Business Post from the Sunrise Media/Key Capital structure for an undisclosed price.

Business Post Group’s own history states that Enda O’Coineen and Colm O’Reilly formed Business Post Group in 2018, after which growth was pursued both organically and through acquisition.

Colm O’Reilly is central to the story. The group says O’Reilly led Kilcullen’s acquisition process in 2018, then joined the executive board to lead investment in digital transformation, became Business Post CEO in 2019 and moved to Group COO in September 2022, coordinating operations and finance.

Structurally, the post-2018 group can therefore be understood as follows:

O’Coineen: capital allocation, group strategy, transactions and external networks.
O’Reilly: acquisition execution, finance, operations and transformation.
Professional editors: journalistic product and editorial credibility.
Management teams of acquired businesses: data, research, events and education expertise.

12、The strategic direction became fully visible in 2019, when Business Post ceased defining itself primarily as a Sunday newspaper.

The publication formally dropped “Sunday” from its masthead and became the Business Post.

The print paper continued to appear every Sunday, but the renaming accompanied a relaunch of digital publishing throughout the week.

What appears superficially to be a branding change was actually a strategic signal:

Business Post was no longer conceptualising itself as a product sold once a week; it was becoming a continuous information brand for business and professional users.

At the same time, the group accelerated acquisitions around the core publication.

13、The first major adjacency was Events & Experiences—turning readership into an organised commercial network.

In 2019, the Business Post structure acquired iQuest Events and Hospitality Expo-related operations.

The strategic logic is strong.

A business publication naturally attracts executives, entrepreneurs, investors, government officials, advisers and professional-services firms. Under a conventional model the chain is:

Media → Content → Reader → Advertising/subscription.

With events, it becomes:

Media → Content and agenda-setting → Business audience → Conferences/exhibitions → Tickets, sponsorship and commercial relationships.

In other words, an audience that could previously only be “readers” could now become an organised professional community.

14、The second expansion line involved brands and vertical content.

In 2019, Business Post Media Group completed an all-share transaction with Irish Studio to acquire brands including Irish Tatler, Food & Wine and Auto Ireland. Irish Studio received a minority interest and a board seat as part of the transaction.

Around the same period, the group also invested in or held interests in businesses including Digital DNA, Tribe101 and Speakers Bureau/Smart Speakers.

The point was not simply to accumulate magazines.

O’Coineen’s strategy was increasingly that of a portfolio or house of brands.

Business Post supplied business and political information.

Irish Tatler and Food & Wine expanded lifestyle audiences and advertiser relationships.

iQuest delivered events.

Smart Speakers provided speakers and corporate-event capability.

Digital DNA connected the group with technology communities and conferences.

The underlying objective was to convert one high-value professional audience into multiple monetisable relationships.

15、The acquisition that most decisively changed Business Post from a media company into a data-and-research group was RED C.

In September 2021, Business Post Group acquired the Irish market research and opinion-polling company RED C Research for €7 million. RED C, founded in 2003, had already been a long-standing polling partner of Business Post.

Company accounts later revealed that the consideration comprised approximately €4.55 million in upfront cash and a further €2.45 million contingent on performance targets.

The acquisition was financed by the group’s existing capital providers, including the shareholder group led by O’Coineen and Beach Point Capital Partners.

RED C CEO Richard Colwell and his management team remained in place, and RED C became the principal Data & Insights pillar of the group rather than merely being absorbed into the newsroom.

The strategic significance is substantial.

News sells an answer to “what happened?” Research can charge companies for answers to “why are consumers behaving this way?”, “what are voters thinking?”, “what should the brand do?” and “where is the market heading?”

The customers overlap, but the economics and contract values can be very different.

16、The 2023 acquisition of Relish Research extended that model into the UK and international markets.

Business Post Group paid approximately £2.5 million for UK-based Relish Research in August 2023 and acquired the remaining 50 per cent of Smart Speakers Ireland the following month for about €100,000. The group had also purchased Digital DNA in 2021 for about €85,877.

By 2026, the Relish brand had been integrated more fully into the RED C structure, expanding the group’s UK and international research capabilities.

This sequence shows that O’Coineen no longer regarded data as merely an auxiliary function supporting publishing. It had become an independent growth engine.

The directors themselves described the strategy in company filings as an evolution from traditional media into a “data driven insights and services group.”

17、The acquisition of the Irish Management Institute in 2025 changed the nature of the group again.

Business Post Group acquired the Irish Management Institute from University College Cork, with the transaction completing on 16 May 2025. IMI is a major Irish provider of management and executive education.

The strategic explanation provided around the acquisition effectively summarises the group’s modern model:

Content — Business Post;
Experiences — iQuest;
Insights — RED C;
Executive Education — IMI.

This creates a full business-customer lifecycle.

Business Post informs decision-makers.

RED C helps organisations understand consumers and markets.

iQuest gathers those people into conferences, exhibitions and professional communities.

IMI then sells leadership and management development directly to executives and companies.

An important asset distinction is necessary. The approximately 13-acre IMI campus in Sandyford should not automatically be treated as real estate acquired by O’Coineen’s group. The Irish Times reported that UCC was expected to retain control of the campus after the transaction. The operating institute was clearly acquired; the campus property itself should not simply be counted as a Business Post real-estate asset.

18、By 2025–2026, Business Post Group was no longer a conventional newspaper company.

Its principal assets can broadly be divided into four categories.

The first is Content / Media, led by Business Post / Businesspost.ie, alongside brands such as Irish Tatler and Food & Wine that entered the portfolio. Business Post remains the group’s most important reputational gateway.

The second is Data & Insights, centred on RED C’s Irish and UK/international research operations and the capabilities acquired through Relish. RED C operates across market research, political polling and research-based consultancy.

The third is Experiences / B2B Events, including iQuest, Business Post Live and related conferences and exhibitions.

The fourth is Learning / Executive Education, centred since 2025 on IMI.

Smaller ecosystem assets and historical investments have included Smart Speakers and Digital DNA.

Strategically, the most valuable combination may therefore be:

Business Post brand + executive audience + RED C data capability + iQuest business relationships + IMI executive education.

Together they form a B2B network built around the business decision-maker.

19、The commercial model has evolved from “selling newspapers” into multilayer monetisation of the same high-value customer base.

The traditional Business Post economics rested on print sales, subscriptions, advertising and later digital subscriptions.

The O’Coineen-era change was to add several additional revenue curves:

Content revenue: print, digital subscriptions, advertising and commercial content.

Event revenue: conferences, summits, exhibitions, sponsorship and corporate partnerships.

Research revenue: market research, polling, consumer and brand studies, and insight consultancy.

Professional-services and education revenue: IMI executive development, management education and corporate programmes.

Professional-network revenue: speakers, events infrastructure and other B2B services.

The group does not publicly disclose sufficiently granular and current segment reporting to calculate each category’s exact percentage contribution to revenue; public information is limited / currently cannot be confirmed.

Yet the strategic logic is unmistakable from the acquisition programme and management statements:

journalism no longer has to carry the entire profitability burden. Instead, journalism acts as the high-frequency, high-trust gateway through which the group can sell higher-value research, events and education to the same business community.

20、The financial evidence confirms very rapid scale expansion, but management claims must be distinguished from filed accounts.

When O’Coineen acquired the business in 2018, Business Post revenue was approximately €7.5 million. By 2022, group revenue had reached approximately €20.33 million, a 64 per cent year-on-year increase. The group nevertheless posted a pre-tax loss of roughly €1.21 million, with acquisition, financing and transformation costs playing a significant role.

The latest filed group accounts cited in 2026 reporting show revenue rising again to about €23.1 million in 2023, up 14 per cent, but losses widening to roughly €2.88–2.9 million. O’Coineen said part of the loss reflected the cost of raising funds for acquisitions.

By 2026, Business Post Group and Bonnier were saying the business had returned to profitability and was generating around €40 million in revenue. O’Coineen also said 2025 profit before adjustments was approximately €2 million. Because complete 2024–2025 statutory accounts were not yet as publicly established as the 2023 figures, these numbers should be treated as management/transaction-announcement figures rather than equivalent to the latest fully public filed financial statements.

Even with that qualification, the movement from approximately €7.5 million to around €40 million shows the scale of the transformation. Growth was not principally the result of print circulation; it accompanied a significant programme of acquisitions and diversification.

21、Bonnier became O’Coineen’s most consequential outside capital partner and ultimately the industrial owner taking over control.

Before the 2026 control transaction, Media Ownership Monitor’s reconstruction of public company filings showed O’Coineen with approximately 57.3 per cent, Derek Butler-related Endeavour Fund Investor Nominees with about 25 per cent, and Bonnier News with roughly 17.8 per cent. That was a pre-2026 transaction snapshot and should not be used to describe the final current control position.

Bonnier is not a conventional private-equity fund. It is a European family-controlled media group with more than two centuries of publishing history. Bonnier News Business operates business titles including Dagens industri, Børsen, Äripäev and Puls Biznesu, giving it experience in digital subscriptions, professional publishing, B2B products and cross-border commercial-media operations.

The approximately €6 million investment in 2023 can therefore be seen as a form of industrial validation.

The 2026 majority-control transaction was the next step:

in roughly eight years, O’Coineen transformed an independent Irish business newspaper into a professional-services group containing research, events and executive education, and then transferred control to a larger European business-media platform while retaining a meaningful minority interest.

The consideration for the 2026 transaction has not been disclosed, so O’Coineen’s realised return, cash proceeds and the present value of his remaining minority holding are publicly limited / currently cannot be confirmed.

22、The critical Business Post decisions of the O’Coineen era can be reduced to five successive upgrades in the company’s identity.

First: the 2018 acquisition.

He moved from technology, finance and investment entrepreneurship into ownership and publishing of a national business newspaper.

Second: the 2019 removal of “Sunday” and expansion into events and magazines.

The company began moving from a weekly newspaper identity toward a continuous digital business-media brand and multi-brand group.

Third: the 2021 RED C acquisition.

The company entered research, data and decision-support services.

Fourth: the 2025 acquisition of IMI.

Content, research and events expanded into leadership and executive education, moving the group decisively into professional services.

Fifth: the 2023–2026 Bonnier partnership and eventual transfer of control.

Business Post moved from an O’Coineen-controlled Irish independent group into Bonnier’s wider European business-media network, while O’Coineen retained long-term minority exposure.

23、O’Coineen’s greatest achievement was not creating a great new newspaper; it was redefining what an old newspaper could become.

Business Post already possessed almost three decades of accumulated journalistic credibility when he bought it.

His strategic insight was that behind that credibility sat one of Ireland’s most commercially valuable audiences—entrepreneurs, executives, investors, lawyers, accountants, consultants, policymakers and other professional decision-makers.

Monetising that audience only through a Sunday newspaper left much of its economic value untapped.

What he built can therefore be interpreted as an audience-monetisation architecture:

News → Trust
Trust → Audience
Audience → Events
Audience/Data → Research
Executives → Education
Group → European B2B network

This is why Business Post’s long-term strategic value cannot be measured by print circulation alone.

24、The outcome is a group substantially larger and broader than the newspaper O’Coineen acquired.

A business generating roughly €7.5 million in 2018 was, by the group’s 2026 description, generating approximately €40 million, with RED C, iQuest, IMI and UK research operations added to the platform. The transformation attracted Bonnier first as a minority investor and then as a controlling buyer.

The sequencing of Bonnier’s investment is particularly informative.

It first invested as a minority shareholder in 2023, entered the board and worked with management.

Three years later it moved to majority ownership/sole control.

From an investment-analysis perspective, that staged escalation provides stronger evidence of buyer conviction than an immediate one-step acquisition, although this is an inference from the transaction sequence rather than a public guarantee by Bonnier of future investment returns.

25、The model nevertheless had substantial costs. The clearest weakness was that expansion ran ahead of profit realisation.

In 2022, although revenue increased 64 per cent, the group recorded a pre-tax loss of €1.21 million. Company filings attributed part of the pressure to acquisition-related advisory costs, finance costs, digital transformation and editorial restructuring.

In 2023, revenue rose again to €23.1 million, yet group losses widened to almost €2.9 million.

O’Coineen’s strategy was therefore not a low-risk, steady-cash-flow model of newspaper management.

It was closer to:

use capital first to enlarge the group’s scale and capabilities, then seek to realise profitability through synergies, digital growth and new businesses.

The 2026 Bonnier takeover can consequently be interpreted in another way: Business Post had grown beyond the stage where it was naturally suited to control by a single entrepreneur and a small investor coalition, and into an asset platform that could benefit from the scale and systems of a larger European industrial media owner.

26、Digital transformation created the classic employment tension experienced across traditional media.

In 2023, Business Post announced a newsroom restructuring under which up to six existing roles were at risk of redundancy, while as many as ten new digital-focused journalism positions were planned. At the time, Business Post employed about 70 people, including 37 in the newsroom.

The episode captures the central transformation dilemma.

It was not simply a decision to eliminate journalism; rather, legacy roles and production structures were being reallocated toward digital subscriptions, multimedia and new products.

For employees, however, that still represented a genuine employment shock. For management, it was presented as necessary for long-term digital sustainability.

Business Post’s transformation therefore cannot be assessed only through revenue growth; it also involved real restructuring of newsroom jobs, production processes and skills.

27、On editorial independence, the principal issue is structural rather than a single well-documented scandal: how should commercial capital, media ownership and editorial authority be separated?

O’Coineen simultaneously held roles including owner, Group CEO and Publisher, while Business Post reported on politics, companies, capital markets and public policy. Its ownership therefore inherently carries public-interest implications.

Editorial authority, however, is exercised by professional editors. The central current figure is Daniel McConnell, appointed editor in 2023 with a mandate to develop a multimedia content strategy, accelerate digital growth and protect the core print product.

The mainstream and official sources reviewed here do not provide sufficient evidence to attribute a major, specific editorial-manipulation scandal to O’Coineen.

The more accurate formulation is that the principal concern is the structural one confronting all diversified commercial media groups:

where are the boundaries between ownership capital, advertisers, B2B research clients, conference sponsors and editorial independence?
