Technologies are defined as good or bad depending on how they are used. It’s upon us, as designers, innovators, builders, investors, and humans, to shape technology for the betterment of humanity.Reid Hoffman · 2025/11/11
Our obligation as technologists is to build and fund things that try and make the future better than the present. That is more true today than ever before. Said another way: we must move quickly into the future while continuously asking ourselves: “How can we build technology in a way that expands human agency, rather than eroding it?” （Homo techne）。 A thing that makes humans different from all other life on earth –– and has allowed us to flourish –– is that we continue to build technologies. We are homo techne. Technologies make certain things much more possible, and sometimes those possibilities have extreme risks. They are defined as good or bad depending on how they are used. It’s upon us as designers, innovators, builders, investors, and deployers to shape technology for the good. *How* we build technology that balances human agency and innovation is a difficult, nuanced conversation. Surely, however, the answer is not a binary choice between e/acc or monthly pause letters. It is difficult to find the answer because we should and must keep accelerating, but we should use more than just the gas pedal. We should also use the steering wheel. It is not “cringe” to continue to want to build more moral, more abundant societies. Most of us in tech, at all levels, believe this –– and try to do it.Reid Hoffman · 2025/11/10
