Belgian Laurent Simons, born on December 26, 2009, is now 16 years old and has earned a PhD in quantum physics. He defended his thesis at the University of Antwerp on November 17, 2025, when he was just 15 years old. Reports suggest he may be one of the youngest PhDs in the field, although there is no unified ranking to verify this.

His educational timeline has been aligned by several English reports. He completed elementary school at about age 6 and graduated from high school at 8. By age 12, he had already obtained a master's degree in quantum physics, focusing on analogies between bosons and black holes, as well as Bose-Einstein condensates at extremely low temperatures. During the ages of 11 to 12, he completed a three-year bachelor's degree in physics at the University of Antwerp in just 18 months with excellent grades. Previously, he had interned in quantum optics at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, beginning to integrate physics with medicine.

His doctoral thesis was on bosonic polarons in superfluids and supersolids, which are movable impurities surrounded by surrounding particles. After the defense, he returned to Munich with his father and has registered for a second PhD, focusing on medicine and artificial intelligence. He claims that degrees are merely a means to an end, with his next goal being to create "superhumans" aimed at extending and improving human life, not for himself. His motivation has been reported as stemming from his grandparents' health issues, and he has mentioned goals related to artificial organs and lifespan extension.

His parents turned down early offers from tech companies in the U.S. and China, prioritizing medicine over publicity. Other reports state that he has photographic memory and an IQ test score of about 145. These details are not part of his degree documentation. The record for the youngest PhD in Guinness history comes from the 19th century and does not align with the modern degree system he is part of.

This is not an admissions advertisement. The educational institutions involved are the University of Antwerp and the medical PhD program in Munich, with him being 16 years old. The event has been driven by the re-circulation of his defense at age 15. Beneficiaries include laboratories looking to apply his quantum training to medical AI. The conventional education system, which schedules courses by age, is under pressure, as is the tendency to replace substantive thesis content with the label of child prodigy. His current registered status is as a medical student, not a company founder.
