Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire stated that he left Silicon Valley six years ago because it had become a singular culture, where dinner tables were filled with tech industry people who ranked each other according to a set hierarchy. He described this as the most extreme groupthink he has ever witnessed.

The hierarchy he outlined is: founders of $100 billion companies ranked above founders of $50 billion companies, above managing partners of top-tier venture capital firms, above professional CEOs of $50 billion public companies, and above founders of $10 billion companies. The ranking is based on company size, title, and valuation, rather than specific achievements.

He believes this hierarchy has two consequences. First, it personalizes individuals and stifles creativity. Second, everyone knows their position in the hierarchy, making them hesitant to speak the truth to power. At the end of his post, he called for a rejection of this practice, urging people to remain strange, think independently, be honest with themselves, and allow for interesting ideas.

His public resume includes a PhD in Physics from Caltech, and he is currently a partner at Sequoia. In March 2026, he posted that he first moved to Silicon Valley in 2007 when it was not a consensus. By around 2016, technology had become a consensus, and he spent only about three months a year in Silicon Valley over the past decade, stating that this was more challenging but helped maintain creativity. His two posts framed "leaving" as an adjustment of residence, not a withdrawal from Sequoia.

In November 2025, he wrote that earlier generations of Sequoia invested in Apple, NVIDIA, Google, etc., which accounted for about 30% of Nasdaq's market value, naming Don Valentine, Mike Moritz, Doug Leone, and Roelof Botha. The same person who uses market value coordinates to measure institutional legacy also criticizes the valuation ranking at dinner tables. The post did not specify his residence after leaving or list projects he missed or completed as a result.

This is a status market, not an equity transaction. Buyers want to be ranked in a higher tier of founders, while sellers are partners who control the terms of the next round. Funds continue to flow based on market value expectations, with professional CEOs placed below founders of the same scale. Those who have already reached the $100 billion tier benefit, while those who do not want to be defined by this ranking and do not want to lose funding channels are under pressure. The ranking accelerates matching and increases the cost of speaking the truth.
