Tether Announces Gradual Shutdown of Alloy Platform and aUSDT Stablecoin

Tether has decided to stop the operation of Alloy by Tether and its stablecoin aUSDT as planned, based on assessments of user activity, market demand, and overall strategic priorities.

Alloy previously served as an open platform exploring the issuance of digital assets backed by XAUT gold, including over-collateralized aUSDT, providing market data on gold-backed tokenization practices.

After the shutdown, Tether will focus its resources on core high-liquidity products like XAUT. The platform will transition in phases: effective immediately, new positions and minting will cease, and existing users can redeem aUSDT for XAUT within three months. Assets not redeemed by September 17, 2026, will be unrecoverable.

Tether, as the world's largest stablecoin issuer, has previously experimented with gold collateral and RWA tokenization through Alloy. This shutdown continues its strategy of focusing on core products USDT and XAUT, prioritizing liquidity and compliance-driven offerings.

In terms of capital allocation, the company is reallocating resources from experimental platforms to expand the XAUT ecosystem and manage USDT reserves, motivated by optimizing capital deployment and reducing risks associated with low-activity products, while leveraging accumulated user behavior insights to support mainline growth.

Similar to early stablecoin projects that have adjusted or exited non-core experiments, and competitors like Circle focusing on high-demand products, the stablecoin industry is transitioning from diversified exploration to a concentration on core assets, with issuers iterating strategies driven by data.

Essentially, this represents a concentration of capital, where resources shift towards high-potential assets after validating experimental projects. The mechanism is that the market's preference for liquidity and trust prompts issuers to focus on core products to maintain network effects and respond to regulatory environments.
