OpenAI announced that less than 200 days after the launch of ChatGPT Ads, the annualized revenue run rate has reached $1 billion, making advertising a new revenue pillar alongside subscriptions, enterprise services, and pay-as-you-go APIs.

The annualized revenue run rate does not mean that the advertising business has confirmed $1 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, but is an extrapolated metric based on recent advertising sales velocity projected over a year. The ChatGPT advertising business began pilot testing earlier this year, so this figure reflects the current revenue pace and does not represent cumulative advertising revenue.

OpenAI stated that the coverage of its advertising business is increasing with global expansion; advertisers can directly purchase ChatGPT ads through Ads Manager in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The platform has entered over 40 countries and has tens of thousands of advertisers and more than 50 technology and measurement partners.

OpenAI previously disclosed that about six weeks after the ad launch, the annualized revenue run rate for ChatGPT Ads exceeded $100 million; now surpassing $1 billion indicates that the business has expanded at least tenfold compared to earlier stages. The company stated that advertising is part of its diversified business model, running parallel to subscriptions for individuals, enterprise client contracts, and pay-as-you-go APIs.

Advertisers are beginning to view ChatGPT as an entry point for search and purchasing decisions. OpenAI revealed that one e-commerce advertiser achieved approximately three times the return on ad spend within 28 days; a technology partner noted that over 80% of the traffic generated by ads came from new customers. The company has not disclosed ad display frequency, click-through rates, average customer acquisition costs, ad inventory supply, specific pricing, or revenue shares across different markets.

This milestone is still below OpenAI's target of $2.5 billion in advertising revenue by 2026. Based on the current $1 billion annualized run rate, the advertising business needs to significantly accelerate in the remaining time of the year to reach that annual target; eMarketer analyst Nate Elliott described the growth performance as "very impressive," but believes this pace is still significantly below the company's established goals.

In terms of market mechanics, ChatGPT converts users' actively posed questions, ongoing dialogue context, and immediate purchase intent into ad inventory, with advertisers paying for conversions closer to the decision-making point; self-service expansion will channel small and medium-sized enterprise budgets into OpenAI's advertising system and increase bidding demand. OpenAI benefits from the ad revenue-sharing model for training, inference, and free user service costs, while Google search ads, Meta social ads, and traditional content websites face pressure from users' attention and the diversion of performance ad budgets; however, if increased ad density harms answer credibility or user experience, the experience stratification between paid subscribers and free users will become a new product risk.
