Perplexity, as a leader in AI search, previously focused on general research. This vertical integration in the legal field continues its path of expansion from consumer to enterprise. Historically, AI tools have accelerated penetration into specialized markets through domain-specific integration.

On the capital front, the company attracts legal tech budgets through a subscription model and partner ecosystem, directing resources towards connecting to specialized knowledge bases and strategically building a closed loop in lawyer workflows.

Similar to the early acquisition of Casetext by Thomson Reuters, Perplexity is currently in the early stages of mainstreaming legal AI, where depth of integration becomes a competitive barrier in the industry.

Essentially, this represents a technological substitution, where AI agents replace some of the research and document work of lawyers, shifting pricing power in legal services towards efficient AI platforms during the restructuring of the industry chain.

General AI first becomes widespread, then vertical integration harvests professional dividends. Productivity = Number of Tool Connections × Citation Accuracy, and legal scenarios validate this formula. In specialized fields, those who embed into daily systems first will win time value.
