Balaji previously proposed the concept of network states, founded Network School, and collaborated with Kazakhstan to advance physical communities and degree accreditation, continuing his path from Coinbase CTO to independently building parallel systems, initially gaining influence through books and communities.

Capital is entering Network School through a $2 billion valuation round led by Polychain, with participation from a16z and Coinbase, concentrating resources on entrepreneurial communities and urban projects in collaboration with sovereign states, motivated by the goal of transforming digital communities into transferable physical exit options.

This is similar to early cryptocurrency attempts at parallel systems to traditional finance or special zone policies in specific countries to attract digital nomads. It is currently transitioning from conceptual discussions to practical collaborations with governments and financing expansions, prioritizing control over talent and capital flows rather than purely technical development.

Essentially, this involves restructuring the industrial chain and transferring pricing power: through network states and cryptographic identities, talent, capital, and governance are partially detached from existing national systems. The mechanism lies in the internet lowering migration costs, allowing high-signal communities to attract resources and form new competitive nodes, thereby reshaping the distribution of sovereignty and exit rights.
