Kalshi Investigates Suspicious Trades Related to Trump's Press Secretary Selection

According to The Wall Street Journal, prediction market Kalshi is investigating a series of suspicious trades on its platform related to the selection of Trump's new White House press secretary, betting that Trump will choose conservative commentator Katie Zacharia for the position.

A Kalshi spokesperson confirmed the investigation but declined to comment further. The White House had previously announced that Zacharia would replace Karoline Leavitt as press secretary. Before the announcement, Zacharia's probability on Kalshi was only about 1%.

At least three small bets were placed before the news broke. A $19 bet placed around 22:43 on Thursday is expected to yield a $1,896 return; two bets of about $74 and $80 placed around 13:41 on Friday are expected to yield returns of $3,689 and $4,023, respectively.

These bets totaled less than $175 in principal, with a potential total return exceeding $9,500. Two of the bets on Friday occurred less than 20 minutes before media reports began covering the appointment. The trades are anonymous to the public, but Kalshi retains user identity records.

In July, White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez was investigated for allegedly using insider information to bet on Trump's speech content on Kalshi, and he no longer holds the position. Kalshi marked the trades at that time and referred them to the CFTC.

The prediction market faces an increased risk of profiting from non-public information. Kalshi stated that it has initiated an investigation but did not disclose further details. The timing of the related trades and the accurate bets on low-probability candidates have raised concerns.

The flow of funds is concentrated on small, precise bets on low-probability events, benefiting traders who obtain information in advance, while putting pressure on the fairness of the prediction market and insider trading regulation.

Kalshi is a prediction market platform regulated by the CFTC, which has previously referred suspicious trades to regulatory authorities. In July, White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez was flagged for profiting over $100,000 on the Kalshi "mentions" market using insider information from speech drafts; his account was frozen, and he no longer holds the position, with Kalshi submitting the case to the CFTC.

This investigation targets three small trades betting on Katie Zacharia becoming press secretary, two of which occurred less than 20 minutes before media reports, and Zacharia's pre-announcement probability was only about 1%. Kalshi confirmed the investigation but did not comment further. Resource mobilization is focused on internal monitoring and potential regulatory referrals, rather than immediate freezes on completed trades.

Similar cases include other prediction markets or betting platforms where precise bets appeared before political appointments or major events, such as historical elections or policy-related markets that were investigated due to information leaks. The current prediction market is transitioning from entertainment betting to regulated financial instruments while facing insider information regulatory pressures.

Essentially, this is a regulatory change: the value of prediction markets relies on fair pricing of publicly available information, while those close to decision-makers can establish positions before news is made public. The mechanism is that small bets on low-probability events can yield returns of dozens of times, and the platform initiates investigations after identifying abnormal timing through internal monitoring, potentially referring to the CFTC, pushing the industry from mere trade facilitation to stricter personnel restrictions and information isolation requirements.

  1. Precise bets at 1% probability represent an information gap.
  2. Small principal, high multiple returns, anomalies in timing.
  3. After the investigation is initiated, the window has already closed.
