Former Activision CEO Kotick Joins Skydance Board

Skydance announced on October 6 that former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has joined the board as an independent director, effective immediately. Also joining are Laurene Powell Jobs, founder of Emerson Collective, and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz. Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will serve as a board advisor in a personal capacity, not as a director.

The company was formed after Paramount was merged into Warner Bros. Discovery, with the stock ticker SKYD. David Ellison continues as chairman and CEO. The board retains the original Paramount directors, adding these three new members. The public list also includes Oracle Executive Vice Chairman Safra Catz, RedBird's Gerry Cardinale, Silver Lake's Justin Hamill, and former Paramount Pictures chairman Sherry Lansing. Kotick will join the Nominating and Governance Committee.

In a statement, Ellison described Kotick's role as focusing on long-term franchises and fan engagement. He stated that Kotick has led a global entertainment company through three decades of sustained growth, combining bold strategies with disciplined capital allocation, which is exactly the experience needed for business mergers. The company aims to inherit the legacy of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery while setting a new direction. Variety reported this merger at $111 billion, officially completed on Tuesday.

Kotick's public resume was included in the announcement. He joined Activision after acquiring a significant stake in 1991, serving as CEO from 1991 to 2023 and chairman from 1991 to 2008. Microsoft acquired the gaming company in 2023 for $68.7 billion. He has also served on the boards of Coca-Cola, Yahoo, and Macromedia. Kreiz joined this week as co-CEO, previously serving as CEO of Mattel.

Blair is currently the executive chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. Powell Jobs brings investment and philanthropic experience. Ellison described the three as providing new perspectives, with a focus on creativity, innovation, and long-term shareholder value. The announcement did not disclose Kotick's shareholding, compensation, or specific authorizations beyond the committee.

This is a board seat, not a new round of financing. The buyers have completed the merger under Skydance. The sellers are the original shareholders of Warner Bros. Discovery. The event was driven by the need to appoint the board on the day of the closing. The beneficiaries are the management aiming to integrate gaming franchise methods into film and television management. The content team faces pressure to make difficult decisions post-merger, as does the existing studio management regarding their influence in the new board. Kotick brings thirty years of gaming company experience, not a new film.
