Binance founder Changpeng Zhao stated in a recent interview that he was placed in the Lompoc II low-security prison in California, which later housed FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

Before entering prison, Zhao assembled a team of advisors to explain the political rules of the cell block. One advisor communicated with other inmates, who agreed to help him adapt after his arrival. He later wrote over 20 pages about his prison experience in a draft memoir, stating that guards asked him for Bitcoin investment advice, while his cellmate was convicted of double murder.

Zhao pleaded guilty to violating U.S. anti-money laundering laws, receiving a 4-month sentence, with his personal wealth not confiscated. He left Lompoc in August 2024 and moved to a halfway house in Southern California. Weeks later, local police arrived, handcuffing and shackling him due to a detainment order issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for visa overstaying during his incarceration.

Immigration issues caused him to spend the last two weeks in local jail, doing push-ups and sit-ups in his cell. On the day of his release in September 2024, his sister, who lives in California, picked him up at a nearby airport; it took 26 minutes from his release to the private jet's takeoff. This chapter of his memoir is titled GTFO.

After serving his sentence, he returned to Abu Dhabi, still a majority shareholder of Binance. The New York Times reported in October 2026 from Abu Dhabi, estimating his wealth at $114 billion, residing in a nine-bedroom villa with four bodyguards, a chef, and a yacht named Da Moon. In October 2025, he received a presidential pardon.

The seller is personal freedom in U.S. judicial proceedings, while the buyer is not secondary market funds. The event-driven aspect comes from the plea agreement separating the company fine from personal short-term imprisonment, keeping the equity under Zhao's name. The beneficiaries are Binance's major shareholders who retained control and the Abu Dhabi base; the pressured parties are the collapsed FTX path with its founder sentenced to long imprisonment and the immigration enforcement layering the detainment order at the end of the sentence.

Lompoc is about 150 miles from Los Angeles. Zhao left the U.S. within 26 minutes of his release, not staying in the country before transitioning to public travel.
