Apple Places Vision Pro on Life Support and Shifts to Screenless Smart Glasses

According to reports from Bloomberg and others, Apple's Vision Pro headset line is nearing "life support," with the company shifting its focus to smart glasses without displays. The launch of the next-generation headset remains uncertain; even if it continues, it will not be available until late 2028 or early 2029.

The current core team responsible for Vision Pro is still fighting to maintain the product line and R&D budget. The team is reportedly exploring about four concepts for a complete redesign of the headset, codenamed N224, which includes options to externalize the chip and battery into a separate box to reduce the headset's weight, similar to the split structure of Meta's new headset. Reports indicate that the cheaper Vision Air and low-cost glass substrate micro-OLED projects have been suspended or canceled, and the development of related panels from Samsung Display is also said to be wrapping up.

Supply chain analysis has narrowed the headset route from multiple devices to two pairs of glasses: screenless AI glasses targeting Ray-Ban Meta around 2027, and AR glasses with screens using waveguides around 2029. John Ternus, who succeeded as CEO, has been noted for deciding to scale back the roadmap. The sales of the Vision Pro, set to launch in 2024, and the M5 update in 2025 have not met expectations; software will still be maintained, but the next-generation headset will no longer be produced at the original pace.

In market dynamics, buyers are developers and early users waiting for lighter, cheaper headsets, while sellers are Apple's hardware committee reallocating budgets and engineers towards glasses. Funding is shifting from the $3,500 headset inventory to the cameras, speakers, and edge chips of screenless glasses. Benefiting from this is Meta, which has turned daily-use glasses into an entry point, while space computing developers and panel suppliers reliant on the Vision Pro ecosystem are under pressure. The event is driven by the contraction of the roadmap rather than the release of a new headset.

Apple spent six years developing Vision Pro into the next-generation computing platform, only to admit in two years that the headset form factor cannot penetrate the mainstream. Ternus's scaling back of the roadmap breaks from Cook's narrative of "headsets being a necessary step": the stone is still on the shelf, but the bridge has shifted towards screenless glasses. After failing on weight, price, and daily wear duration, the company chose to first make camera glasses validated by Meta, pushing screen AR to 2029.

The capital path involves reallocating engineers and panel budgets. The micro-OLED high-density route does not serve the mass market, and with the halt of G-VR low-cost panels, cheap headsets lose their substrates. Resources are flowing towards S-series level low-power chips, camera, and speaker modules. The motivation is to seize the daily-use entry point first, then discuss augmented displays; the strategy is to avoid burning another platform without a second generation on headsets.

Similar shifts have occurred with Google Glass retreating from headset dreams, Microsoft HoloLens scaling back for enterprise, and Meta using Ray-Ban to build up shipment volumes before returning to headsets. The industry is in a phase of form control: screenless AI glasses are expanding, headsets are becoming niche maintenance, and screen glasses have yet to reach mass production.

Structural judgments belong to technological substitution. The computer on the head is replaced by sensors on the face; the pricing power of spatial computing has shifted from a 23-megapixel screen to whether glasses can be worn all day. The mechanism is: when you must take it off to live, the platform is no longer a platform, just a demonstration machine.

  1. The next-generation platform that cannot be sold will first be renamed life support.
  2. Screenless glasses often ship before headsets with screens.
  3. When the roadmap contracts, accessory makers know the outcome before users.
