Sui Foundation Invests $30 Million in DATA Network and Integrates into Sui, Previously Known as Story Protocol

The Sui Foundation has invested $30 million in DATA Network, becoming its largest institutional holder. DATA Network will shut down its independent chain and migrate as a native protocol to Sui.

The project was previously known as Story Protocol, which launched an EVM-compatible L1 in February 2025, focusing on programmable intellectual property and automated licensing; it was renamed DATA Foundation in June 2026, shifting towards AI training data provenance infrastructure. Existing DATA tokens will be migrated to Sui at a 1:1 ratio, with holders' economic and governance rights at least remaining equivalent, and lock-up and vesting arrangements unchanged.

After the migration, Walrus will become the default storage layer for DATA Foundation applications, and the Trace registry (which records the sources and usage rights of AI training data) will connect to the Sui ecosystem. Since its launch in June, Trace has recorded over 250 million contributions, processing more than 3 million receipts daily. The independent chain will continue to operate until the upgrade is complete, and the foundation stated that a detailed timeline and holder transition plan will be announced before the migration, with no specific date currently available.

PIP Labs and DATA Foundation will continue to hold shares, and PIP Labs CEO SY Lee will serve as a strategic advisor to the Sui Foundation. Sui and DATA Foundation stated that this move aims to expand the AI training data supply chain, placing verifiable, rights-clear data on the Sui and Walrus infrastructure.

Story Protocol previously received multiple rounds of funding from institutions such as a16z, totaling approximately $140 million. The token price significantly dropped after the migration from IP to DATA, with some community voices questioning the project's directional change and chain closure. The official emphasis is on the continuation of holders' rights and viewing the migration as a choice to reduce independent chain maintenance costs and utilize existing storage and access control capabilities.

Market Mechanism: The Sui Foundation acquires the AI data provenance protocol through equity investment and chain integration, driven by the project's shift from an independent L1 to an ecosystem protocol to reduce costs and connect to the storage layer; funds flow from the Sui Foundation to DATA Network, benefiting the Sui ecosystem (which gains data traffic and storage demand) and DATA holders (with 1:1 token migration and rights continuation), while the burden falls on the original independent chain validators and holders relying on the original L1 narrative (facing infrastructure switching and valuation adjustments).

Story Protocol was developed by PIP Labs and received tens of millions to over a hundred million dollars in funding from institutions like a16z between 2023 and 2024, positioning itself as a programmable L1 for intellectual property; after launching its mainnet in 2025, it was renamed DATA Foundation in June 2026, shifting to AI training data provenance and launching the Trace registry, now being invested in by the Sui Foundation with $30 million to promote the closure of the independent chain and 1:1 token migration to Sui.

In terms of capital pathways, the project shifts from independent chain financing and token issuance to a protocol model relying on external chain ecosystems, exchanging Sui investment for the largest institutional holding position and Walrus storage integration, aiming to reduce the costs of self-built validators and infrastructure while converting data contribution records into verifiable assets on Sui. This continues its strategic adjustment from IP licensing to AI data rights.

In analogy, this resembles cases where some early L1 projects close independent chains and migrate to larger ecosystems due to insufficient adoption, or data protocols shift from self-built networks to integration relying on existing storage layers; it is currently transitioning from the concept of AI training data rights and provenance to an executable registry, with DATA attempting to prove demand through contribution scale, although paid usage remains to be validated.

Essentially, this reflects capital concentration under industrial chain reconstruction: independent L1s are integrated into larger chain ecosystems due to maintenance costs and insufficient adoption, shifting data provenance capabilities from self-owned chain security budgets to shared infrastructure, with the mechanism being to continue token and governance rights while outsourcing storage and access control to Walrus, thus shifting the project's survival from independent narratives to ecosystem traffic and institutional capital support.

  1. When the maintenance cost of an independent chain exceeds the value of protocol migration, closure becomes an option.

  2. Continuation of token rights does not equal continuation of original narrative value.

  3. Institutional investment exchanges for maximum holdings while also securing ecosystem integration.
