SpaceX founder Elon Musk stated that he will not seek funding from any venture capitalists to advance Mars colonization. He believes that this endeavor does not qualify as a viable investment, so he chooses to gather resources himself rather than pursue external fundraising.

This statement directly responds to Neil deGrasse Tyson's criticism on the Bill Maher show. Tyson simulated a venture capital meeting: the goal is to go to Mars, costing $1 trillion, with zero return on investment, and the meeting ends in five minutes. Musk did not dispute the "zero return" but shifted the funding source from venture capital to his own resource pool.

He also defined Mars as key to the long-term survival of consciousness. This statement appeared on November 23, 2024, with related posts receiving over 180,000 likes, about 17,000 shares, and over 27,000 replies, with approximately 28.8 million views. Some immediately expressed willingness to donate $10 million, but this is not a publicly set fundraising channel.

Since its founding in 2002, SpaceX has written Mars as a long-term goal. Musk has previously stated that sustaining a city would require about 1 million people and millions of tons of cargo, planning to reduce the cost of traveling to Mars to an affordable level for individuals within about 20 years using Starship. Early missions prioritize transporting water, oxygen, and fuel production equipment rather than sending settlers first.

Resource gathering does not equate to a separate equity financing round for Mars. Verifiable sources of resources include Starlink subscription cash flow, NASA's crewed lunar landing contracts, and proceeds from Musk's previous sale of Tesla stock. Mars colonization itself does not have near-term returns that can be sold externally, and Starship is still in the test flight iteration stage.

In market mechanisms, the buyer is not venture capital, and the seller is not equity in the Mars project. Musk is using cash-generating businesses and existing wealth to fund a negative net present value goal. The payers are satellite broadband users, government clients for launch and lunar contracts, and Tesla shareholders who bear equity dilution. Traditional venture capital is explicitly excluded. Beneficiaries of launch and in-orbit communication capabilities are pressured by financial investors who require clear exit paths.
