Elon Musk replied to a post about deleting accounts on October 1, stating simply, "Instagram is for girls." The original poster claimed to have officially deleted Instagram, stating that it is essentially a female app with no benefits. The reply appeared about an hour after the original post.

This is not the first time. On May 15, he responded to another post with, "LOL, Instagram is for girls." Earlier reports from Indian media noted that when an adult male sent him an Instagram homepage, he asked if the person was transitioning genders. The October 1 reply did not elaborate, containing only six words.

At the time of checking, the original post had about 21,000 likes and 820,000 views. Musk's reply had about 75,000 likes, 4.1 million views, was retweeted about 9,000 times, and quoted about 2,400 times. The replies were split into two sections. One section referred to X as text and real-time discussion, while the other described Instagram as a visual trend and social relationship, stating that this relationship is not gender-specific. Some replies directly stated that it is the strongest dating app.

Instagram belongs to Meta, offering photos, stories, and lifestyle content. X is owned by Musk, publicly positioned as a platform for open dialogue and real-time posts. The two product lines are already competing for the same user time. There were no product updates or advertising revisions this time, only a statement from the platform owner characterizing the user structure of a competing product.

Public materials did not provide gender ratios, time spent, or advertising prices for Instagram, nor the number of deleted accounts. Geiger Capital's profile focuses on markets, economics, and politics, and the post indicated personal opinions, not investment advice. Musk did not provide data or state whether he has stopped using Instagram.

The target is users still allocating time between the two apps, selling the platform's persona. This is a reply-driven attention, not user migration data. Attention shifted from the account deletion statement to the gendered labeling of Meta's photo products on X. The side benefiting is the one trying to categorize X as different from Instagram, while Instagram, which relies on visual content for advertising, is under pressure. A single reply cannot change the daily active users on either side.
