Tesla Robotaxi Unsupervised Fleet Expands to 25 in Austin

Tesla has added 3 Unsupervised (no safety driver) Robotaxi vehicles in Austin, bringing the total to 25. Austin currently has 51 active operating vehicles, with unsupervised vehicles soon to exceed half.

All operating Robotaxi in Dallas and Houston have achieved Unsupervised operation.

This progress marks Tesla Robotaxi's acceleration from supervised to fully autonomous driving in major Texas cities.

Tesla has been continuously expanding its Robotaxi testing in Texas cities such as Austin, Dallas, and Houston since launching the Cybercab project in 2024. Previously, it accumulated unsupervised mileage across multiple cities with the FSD v12.5+ version. The addition of 3 vehicles in Austin is the latest data point in its gradual removal of safety drivers, continuing Elon Musk's strategy of "scale first, refine later."

On the capital front, Tesla is directly investing Dojo computing power and FSD data loops into the expansion of its Robotaxi fleet, validating its economic model through real paid operations. Meanwhile, in Texas's relaxed regulatory environment, it is rapidly accumulating autonomous driving mileage, providing data and regulatory basis for nationwide and global expansion.

Similar to Waymo's gradual path from supervised to unsupervised in Phoenix and San Francisco, and Cruise's adjustments after early aggressive expansion, Tesla Robotaxi is currently in an accelerated phase of transitioning from testing validation to commercial-scale deployment.

Essentially, this is a technological substitution: Tesla is rapidly increasing Unsupervised Robotaxi, replacing human safety drivers with a pure AI decision-making system, shifting capital from high labor costs of supervised operations to a scaled autonomous fleet. Mechanically, it continuously iterates FSD through real city data, accelerating the transformation of Robotaxi from an experimental project to a profitable infrastructure.

Autonomous driving is not achieved overnight; each additional unsupervised vehicle brings it closer to scale. Regions with relaxed regulations are the true signal for capital to invest heavily. The rate of decline in the number of safety drivers often reflects the maturity speed of the Robotaxi business model.
