Microsoft has launched a redesigned Copilot application. CEO Satya Nadella stated that the goal is to build Copilot into a "new operating system for work" that covers every model, form, and task. The application has three entry points: Home, Code, and Autopilot, and integrates the full functionality of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into a single interface through Office in Copilot.

The Home section merges Chat with Cowork, which can complete tasks, and plans to include a Today dashboard summarizing emails, meetings, and Teams threads. Code is based on the same technology as GitHub Copilot, allowing non-developers to generate applications, dashboards, and workflows using natural language. Autopilot, renamed from Scout released at this year's Build, is a continuously online personal agent with an independent identity, memory, and workspace, which continues to operate even after the user leaves. Jared Spataro has positioned this as a response to Office's definition in the personal computer era.

Office in Copilot is not just a document viewer: it allows for the generation and real-time collaborative editing of actual files within conversations, keeping in sync with native Office. Home and Code will first be pushed to the Frontier project, while Autopilot will expand to private preview by the end of the month, and Office in Copilot will be available to consumers and Frontier customers within weeks. Cowork, Code, and Autopilot will be billed based on usage, unlike the $30 per seat per month subscription for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Less than 7% of over 450 million commercial Office seats globally have activated the advanced AI add-on.

On September 9, Meta launched the personal agent Muse, which features no need for self-built models and servers, and can be used via applications, web pages, or WhatsApp. Internally, Microsoft positions the new Copilot as "AI built for work" and acknowledges that consumer-level chat has fallen behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Muse. Merging the consumer and workplace versions of Copilot effectively withdraws from the personal chatbot race, reclaiming the entry point back to the office suite.

In market dynamics, the buyers are enterprise IT departments that have paid for Office seats but have not yet purchased the $30 AI add-on for each seat; the seller is Microsoft, which packages chat, programming agents, and long-term tasks into a single application, charging based on tokens and runtime. Funding shifts from seat subscriptions to usage billing, with document generation locked within Microsoft's file format and identity system. Beneficiaries are procurement departments that can account for agent expenses in FinOps; pressured parties include bundled applications sold directly to the same batch of enterprise customers by Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as open-source agent stacks that rely on independent deployment. Muse competes for personal automation downloads, while Copilot aims for seat conversion rates.
